you need more than towers, railroads and other pieces of infrastructure when you're in the cellular phone business...
you need to be given frequencies to air on. and here the story begins... you're gonna confront state, military, law enforcement people, other businessmen, everyone...

Yet, the US --- with the largest military industrial complex in the whole world (with the largest amount of RF frequencies reserved for the military) --- is able to auction out enough RF frequencies for 6 national carriers (which has since reduced to 4 national carriers by mergers okayed by the pro-business Republican administration).

they are only 6? in that holy juggernaut???? sorry... being hard to achieve doesn't necessarily mean being unfeasible in principle. everything around is nowadays the matter of how much money are you ready to put down...

Which is to say that everything that the French government told you is garbage.
US carriers manage to make decent profits --- while having to pay for RF licenses via auctions since time immemorial (as opposed to European governments basically giving out GSM licenses for peanuts), having to deal with 6 competitors, having to deal with a large US country with low population density, and giving US consumers a cheaper mobile telephone service that allows Americans to use over 1000 minutes per month.
Meanwhile, French carriers can charge a lot of money because there are not much competition (and zero foreign competition), got their GSM licenses for peanuts, got their 3G licenses at reduced prices, have a higher population density than US...
Which is to say that everything that the French government told you is garbage.
I'd swear they told me absolutely - hmm... almost? - nothing about phones. Or is it just my memory who's kidding me like that Wait... They're telling me that they stick to their promises, that's true... That everywhere else everything's going even worse than here... No, they don't tell me anything about phones...

huh... that's good point of you, I admit. Doesn't that scare you much to gaze at several states, having the combined population totaling to that of France, and being close to each another?... It would then be of huge interest to see how many carriers are visible in there... ugh?
Pls, don't feel insulted... We're here just to kid one another, nothing more

I don't feel insulted anyway whatsoever.
It's like the classic Bee Gees song "I started a joke" --- you started a joke, but at the end of the day, the joke is really on the French people (including you).
You can belittle the US all you want.
France basically gave their 3G licenses away to French carriers --- yet the US has a higher 3G penetration rate than France. France has all kinds of laws that require this and that on unlocking --- yet Apple still can have their own way with the iphone in France. US has a much better iphone data plans than France. The average American talks about 1000 minutes on their cell phone in a month vs. France has 200-300 minutes tops.
The worldwide launch of the iphone has been the best thing that has happened for American mobile geeks. The grass is not greener in Europe.

The day does not end at the same moment in States and in France. One keeps saying about timezones. It may help.

I viewed it as shrinking to normal size.

I'd say it's kinda settlement between them here. You can buy legally unlocked iphone from Orange. Not jailbroken, but unlocked by Orange itself. It costs 7 hundreds, sure, no one's that insane, but in principle, you can.
I believe Apple will finally give iphone to two other french carriers. But I am quite sure, they wouldn't make us happier, they wouldn't offer better plans and quality, than Orange does

Yet we have unlimited sms. No, I wouldn't call it "much better". You have basic plans voice+data at $70 before taxes, we have basics of 45 eur, taxes included. You're contracted for 2 years, we are for only 12 months for 5 euros more. Frankly, I'm trying hard but I can't spend my 120 + 120 evening & weekend per month...
