[quote] One more thing, I can't find anywhere the inkwell after default installation <hr></blockquote>

I believe apple is doing something smart here. In the PreferencePane directory, for Inkwell, there is a binary called 'Check_for_tablet', or something similar. I imagine when Sys Prefs runs, it executes this binary to see if it can find a tablet. If it does, it displays the pref pane, if not, it doesn't. Thus, inkwell is 'installed' just not in use, since you have no tablet.

It would be interesting to see if you opened sys prefs, then plugged in a tablet, if it would automatically show the inkwell pref pane, or if you'd have to restart it ...

Also, anyone else disappointed there was no cheap Apple tablet introduced at MWNY? I was really kinda hoping for one ... then again, with the way Jobs glossed over inkwell, maybe its just sort a 'nice-to-have', or a 'look what we can do' type thing?

    Ok - for the record.

As far as 10.1 goes - 4k78 was NOT the first GM. 4k6x was.

I'm not gonna say which number, but trust me, it wasn't.

I also seriously doubt 98 is final either, since there are newer builds, and newer builds would branch off the 6c trunk, not be part of it.

Also, what "appears" to be GM, rarely is. If you got a copy and it works really great - then good for you. There is a lot more QA that goes into something like this - there are a LOT of variables to consider, and not all from an end user point of view. They have to make sure all the new API's and revisions to the old ones work as advertised, etc.

Towards the end of almost any development cycle [for any product], the builds will slow down as more QA is done until there are enough "acceptable" bugs and then you branch off and start to address those with the first software update...

Don't worry, it will come soon enough, and we will all be very pleased.

Do you mean GM or FC (Final Candidate?) Sorry to be pedantic, but I think the rumors about 6C7x builds being GM were started because of this confusion. I wouldn't be surprised if the rumors are right that 6C7x builds of Jaguar were FC builds, but I doubt that they've settled on a GM even now.

Well all I can say is that build 6C98 is running so well I am considering installing it on my main computer. It may not be GM but it's sure better than 10.1. Any body have any problems or reasons why I shouldn't do this. I don't want to screw anything up.

You don't want to screw anything up, so you're installing a beta operating system? Let's think about this for a second...

I honestly don't care how stable any of the builds appear to be... but you play wit beta and you will eventually get burned. I'd never drop beta 'ware on my production box... I have test boxes I use for that. Wait for the final, or at least start backing up your box religiously.

Well I have everything backed up. But I don't feel like I should do it. I have it installed on a old iMac for test and that is were it is going to stay. Also I noticed something interesting. In 10.2 in the Apple System Profiler it says RELEASE_PPC Could this be an indication of a future x86 release. You see what I mean if they have a power PPC version and they bothered to tell you that was what this was it infers that there is a PC release. Also I really wouldn't be surprised if 6C98 was GM becasue it is really stable my old iMac is now as fast as my powermac 867 ( well almost) lol. It is a huge speed jump. Also warcraft 3 now runs on my old iMac about 90% better than it did. I have to say this is as big as 10.1 bigger because of new software. I think 129 is a fine price to pay. I'm going to preorder mine today along with some more DVD's. I am very impressed for if 6C98 is a beta I can't imagine how good GM will be.

MacOS X came from NeXT's OPENSTEP, which ran on several chip architectures. The PPC/x86 release directory structure within apps is a holdover from that, and not indicative of a new direction.

FWIW, the 17-inch iMacs are running 6C98. I just played with one at the SoHo store.

Adds a little fuel to the "6C98 is final" fire, though it could be explained another way: Maybe the 17-inch iMac requires 6C98 or later to work. After all, the other machines in the store were still running 10.1.5.

6C98 is very close to final ( I have sources I tend to trust) but it is not quite there yet. Although it is safe to install just a few small bugs. It is more stable than 10.1.5 though. Next build will prob be final.

I could be wrong thats why I want unknown to tell us why he thinks that it is GM...

    Where are you Unknown

I have one very simple reason why c98 cannot be GM.

Apple announced support for Hebrew and Arabic in 10.2 and there's still no sight of it in c98 (support means there's a script for thoses languages...)

    so no GM yet... :o

Also, color calibration seems to be broken. My LCD is all blue-ish and changing the color settings don't do squat. Also, iTunes is version 2. There's no way that they would ship it with v2.0. It's close, but not there yet.

How long till 10.2.2? After all this is how long 10.1 took to stabilize. Will Jaguar be like this? I think I'll read Macfixit for a few days before installing

A reboot fixed it. This build is looking pretty sweet. I must say the HWR is AWESOME! I can't wait to see how hardware companies leverage this new "Mac Advantage" finally, something that can only run on a mac. Between this and the open standards, Apple is looking really good.

BTW, this post was brought to you by Inkwell

it's the selection of the language GUI, not the possibility to write in arabic nor hebrew... :-)

you must have a "script" or that (like the roman, the russian and japanise ones...)this script basically lets he user write from right to left.

this script should be hopefully in one of the next builds...

When I was at MWNY this passed Friday, all of Apple's machines were running OS X.2 6C98 -- and I heard several Apple Reps refer to it as "Mac OS 10.2 Jaguar BETA".

    EDIT:

Just noticed in the screenshot above that the standard ToolBar is transparent since the 'sheet' is the focus. Never noticed that before, pretty slick
