Apple on Icons

Check out Apple's page for developers on <a href="http://developer.apple.com/ue/aqua/icons.html"; target="_blank">creating Icons for Aqua</a> and download the <a href="http://developer.apple.com/ue/aqua/resources/AquaIconKit1.1.dmg.bin"; target="_blank">Aqua Icon Kit 1.1</a> which also contains a standard set of icon templates and actions for use with Adobe Photoshop.

Also, Apple's <a href="http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Essentials/AquaHIGuidelines/index.html"; target="_blank">Aqua Human Interface Guidelines</a> (updated for Jaguar) has an entire chapter (chapter 11) on icon design.

Cool, huh ?

    There's a whole new section on UI (or UE as Apple calls it).

    <a href="http://developer.apple.com/ue"; target="_blank">http://developer.apple.com/ue</a>;

    Some good stuff. They're finally starting to show how and why Aqua is not just eye-candy, but good UI (for the most part) that employs a few different principles than Platinum.

    Er, for the "most part" it *is* Platinum, and the bits that don't work are entirely *not* Platinum.

    By and large, Aqua is like any other computer GUI, be it Platinum, Windows in any iteration, etc. Apple even says so on those pages. But like Hobbes said, there are differences. These pages do help you see into their ideas of not only what Aqua is supposed to be, but where they see the GUI going.

    The new section on speech is interesting not so much for the current technology which seems mostly unchanged since the original Mac, but it hints at what might be coming. Still, it's mostly a graphical user experience. They're sticking to the "desktop" metaphor pretty closely despite other hints for less real-world behavior (the whole "smart folders" discussion among others). They keep expanding on the desktop idea to include "shelf," "drawer" and similar real-world items but more for presentation purposes than functionality.

    My favorite part is comparing windows' save dialogs with OS X's. It just shows that they seem to have some compelling ideas/concepts in their work.

    On another note, I still think one more GUI principle is missing from the guidelines: out of sight, out of mind.

    That's probably because Apple doesn't recognise this as an issue - see the Dock for a perfect example.
