Im new to a Mac and need to know how I can backup my data to an external drive. Do I need to purchase a specific type of drive and does it have to be formatted a certain way for Macs?

Time machine will be your friend.

Any external USB drive will do. Firewire drives are faster, but not every mac has a firewire port.

I recently posted a free ebook on "Backing Up Data with a Mac Computer." It includes an article on buying an external drive for your Mac and instructions on how to format and clone a drive. You can get it from this link:

It's the first book at the top of the page and you can download it for free from the website.
