Remote Desktop Control & Collaboration
This is a very nifty little piece of software. It's very simple, very safe, it works, and it works across platforms!

TeamViewer – a must-have app
Ideal if you want someone to explain to you how to do certain things on your PC or Mac: they can simply show you, from where-ever in the world they may be! In real time.
They can even do maintenance (SysAdmin) work on your PC or Mac for you, from a distance. While you can watch what they're doing (and you can pull the plug on Teamviewer if you don't like what you see happening!). In real time.
Or you can show them, where-ever in the world they are, whatever is happening on your desktop, like presentations that you are running on your desktop (like your vacation pix, or your porn collection, or whatever; they can see 'm, but they can't nick 'm!). In real time.
And you can send and receive large files (> 10MB; files too large for eMail), directly. Without intermediairies like Pando, Podmailing c.s. In real time.
I've tested it from Mac to Mac (over the internet) and that works excellently. A bit sluggish, but it works!
As I'm also SysAdmin and helpdesk for my 81 year old mother, who lives 10 miles down the road, this TeamViewer app is a godsend for me. I can now see what her ICT problem is, instead of misunderstanding her well-intentioned, but unintelligible descriptions over the phone! And I can fix it myself from where-ever I am at that moment! In real time.
I don't have to jump into my car anymore, and I save time, gas, money, and the environment, and she gets instant 'service'!

The Windows version doesn't even need installation! Just starting up.
Of course TeamViewer needs to be running simultaneously on both machines. And you need to exchange a randomly generated ID and password – for a secure connection – with 'the other side'. By telephone or skype is most convenient, obviously, but you can also coordinate through email, chat, or even texting!

Thanks to iChat screen sharing, you and your buddy can observe and control a single desktop, so you can easily collaborate with a colleague, browse the web with a friend, or pick plane seats with your spouse. Share your own desktop or your buddy?s ? you both have control at all times. iChat initiates an audio chat when you start a screen sharing session, so you can talk things through while you?re at it.
TeamViewer, OTOH, does deliver what it says it does!
iChat (currently 4.0.8) has never worked for me at all. So it doesn't show me the other's desktop (or mine to him) either, and lets me control it even less (or v.v.).

Well, sorry yours doesn't seem to work. Mine does and quite well. You could always just look into why yours doesn't work, but I assure you, it is designed to do what you want.

I could, but I won't as I expect it to work without having to 'look into it'. It doesn't work for me, and I'm not inclined to waste my precious time on it as I don't chat as a matter of principle.

There are all kinds of reasons why certain software doesn't work on computers of all platforms. All I'm saying is that it does work, but for some unknown reason, you're having a problem with it on your machine. Happens all the time with lots of people on all platforms.

No it does not. Mr. H suggested the iChat route if you are going Mac to Mac.

You never suggested you needed Windows compatibility until now. So my assumption was that you were going Mac to Mac and I was simply saying that you were wrong and it DOES do that. If you need Windows compatibility, iChat is not for you. But not because of the reasons you gave above. So enjoy TeamViewer, it sounds like it works great for you.
