Apple has no reason to respond to what others are doing. So far, no one has even caught up to the first gen iPhone. With their world-class built-in accessibility features that no one else is even capable of thinking of, Apple is so far out in front with the 3GS, they could rest on their laurels for the next five years. The thing is, they're not resting at all. They are already cooking up the next iteration of the iPhone. If history is any guide, by the time the industry catches up to the present reality, Apple will have warped reality again.

What is absurd is to honestly believe that Apple operates in a bubble.

Of course Apple responds and reacts to outside factors. They would be foolish not to. I never argued that Apple does not innovate. They have indeed created the best phone on the market today, IMHO. But this doesn't make me stupid enough to believe that if their market momentum was slowed by a truly successful competitor, that they would not put even more resources into the platform and help to drive innovation. Would they innovate without serious competition? Sure. Would they be more driven by a threat? It would be stupid to believe they wouldn't.

So believe me, I would not be surprised if Apple went to Verizon, its nothing personal (majority of the times), its all about business opportunities!

Verizon is pretty shrewd at this game. They're no sleeping giant like MS. Just look at their new "map" ad.

Verizon's MAP Ad is deceiving. Their 3G network is slower than AT&Ts, it can not provide coverage outside of the US (why don't they show a Global Map?), and they do not recognize AT&T's Edge Network as a 3G Network....which, according to industry standards, it is.

Needless to say, AT&T needs to work on expanding their 3G GSM network ASAP.

I have to disagree- Apple is always at MS' throat.

MS for the most part pays Apple no mind.

Do you think Verizon has hurt Apple's feelings? Seriously, these are businesses whose only desire is to make profit. Don't forget two huge decisions made by Apple without regard to hurt feelings. Sculley changed from its partnership with Motorola to the arch enemy IBM for its processor technology in the 90's. More recently the world was surprised again by Jobs decision to shift from IBM to Intel.

The deal is likely to be made when it makes sense (i.e. money) for both parties and fits with their strategies. For instance, in the US market, the last time I checked I thought Verizon's network did not support the GSM technology used by the iPhone. Verizon has committed to LTE for its future 4G network and Apple seems similarly inclined for the future. But Apple is not going to support CDMA just for Verizon and Verizon is not going to deploy GSM just for the iPhone. Technology is the determinant here, not snarky commercials.

Apple will go to Verizon only after Verizon moves to 4G. Apple will not make CDMA phones because it requires making another version of the phone, and Apple likes to keep its product line simple and minimize the amount of inventory it has to keep. GSM is pretty much the worldwide standard.

Unless Donut aims to fix this, Google phones STILL can't BT file share.

I thought Android apps are just like "java" apps and don't have access to the real OS like iPhone Apps do. Pre apps suck as well for this.

So are we to assume you don't have a TV set? Microsoft's multi million dollar ad campaign is aimed directly at Apple. Also, at least recently, whenever Apple is rumored to have a new product soon to be released, Microsoft feels the urge to "leak" news of projects and prototypes they have in their labs. Then there are the claims that Microsoft employees and the children of high level executives not being allowed to have iPods. The comments of Ballmer about Apple in interviews speak for themselves. The notion that "MS for the most part pays Apple no mind" is comical.

I would agree. MS was always obsessed with Apple under Gates and under Ballmer they seem as much or more so.

This is the crucial question about this announcement. Verizon has been the antithesis of open for wireless. Anyone can mouth platitudes but will there be a meaningful change in the way Verizon operates as a result of the pressure they are feeling from missing the iPhone opportunity? That would be a good outcome for consumers. It would also make more likely a deal between Apple and Verizon when Verizon finally upgrades to a less parochial network standard like LTE. There isn't a realistic chance of a deal before that transition occurs and Verizon really learns that crippling their customers' phones is a bad idea.

On the other side of the ledger this development might nudge Apple toward accepting apps like Google Voice so they don't look increasingly foolish.

ANd when exactly did that start in the 25 history of things?

That highlighted item is sheer paranoia - I would keep a check on that.

I you owned Polariod would you have you family using Kodak? Same thing for cars, softdrinks, etc, etc. You're really pushing it now.

    More like-

Verizon to Apple: The iPhone GSM is a "bag of hurt".

Or "When you build it, We will come!"

But I don't see any upside for Verizon in allowing the Pre, Windows Mobile, RIM and Android onto its network with their own app stores but still refusing Apple. Nothing will sell them nearly as many lucrative data plans as the iPhone.

Verizon is not refusing apple. It is the other way around.

First off at the highest speeds at&t reports 1.7 downloads to 1.4 at VZW. That's not bragging rights, also considering next year's Debut of L.T.E. 2. A global map is roaming, not at&t's. Vzw has phones, broadband cards to "roam" if you like.. 3. The map is not deceiving, You'd see quite a lawsuit now, otherwise. 4. Edge according to I assuming your boss at the deathstar provides average data speeds between 75-135Kbps. Whose industry standards are we talking about?

Personally, I'd like to see a device like the iphone on every carrier, Sorta like what apple was proposing when they launched this thing. LIKE google is actually doing as we speak. We're their winning is the operating system has no costs to the manufacture's. Make the apps free/innovative/easy to understand. Create google's versions of ones that others charge for,

why would an iphone be suddenly so attractive? Besides that the "hardware" is. Every device has a different purpose, Vzw has made the statement it would like to have every major player under it's network. I/& everyone els)e knows by now that there is alot of android devices(with that flash browser reported at 500 mbs) coming to all the carriers, (untied states at least) & If the Verizon/L.T.E./rumors are true set for next years, I would hope that both companies Vzw, Apple take some ques from this google deal & promote the user having the open choice, control, end experience. I'd buy one .

My God, please no! I'd rather they just stick with AT&T and force them to upgrade their service somehow.
