Apple ranks among top in social media influence
In an analysis of the world's most valuable brands, Apple ranked among the top companies in generating social media interest on services such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter.
Social Media Analytics firm Sysomos issued rankings on the amount of online "buzz" generated by twenty of the top companies as determined by international brand consultancy Interbrand. Google, Apple, and Microsoft took the top spots in the rankings, edging out companies such as Disney, Samsung, and Intel.
Sysomos based the rankings on results from their Media Analysis Platform, which catalogs social media conversations and tracks the trends and sentiment contained within. Interbrand drew their rankings from criteria such as financial data, international scope, and Economic Value Added.
When comparing both lists, Apple showed the biggest gain between the two, going from #20 in Interbrand's rankings to #2 in the Sysomos list.
Apple's growing influence in social media and culture has been well documented:
CEO Steve Jobs was named the most admired entrepreneur in a survey of 1,000 children between the ages of 12 and 17.
Another survey showed that a majority of teens own an iPod, holding an 87 percent share among them.
J.D. Power and Associates' customer satisfaction survey saw Apple at the top of the list, with 811 points out of 1000.
Apple hopes to use this positive public and online sentiment to continue to chip away at Microsoft's share of the personal computer market. With the impending launch of Windows 7, Apple has endeavored to highlight the fact that their platform is best suited to interact with the popular iPods and iPhones in a new series of ads aimed directly at Microsoft.

So 87% of teens own some kind of an iPod? Amazing, but not too surprising. Now it's Apple's task to turn all of them into iPod touch and iPhone owners.
No, iMac and MBP owners.... then they can never go back....

Microsoft, the epitome of un-cool!? In any event, what would they be generating 'buzz' about? Windows 7? Unlikely.
This analysis is not credible.....

They absolutely would be generating buzz with Windows 7, especially being less than a week away. Let's also not forget that Microsoft makes the Xbox brand, which is considered by most the de facto standard in gaming right now (whether that's a good thing or not is another debate).
I'm more surprised by Intel even being on the list to begin with. Honestly, does the average user of Myspace or facebook really care about Intel to the point that they want to follow them?
Color me unimpressed.
Anything that includes MySpace and Twitter as a medium of communication or importance is worthless. Twitter sucks, and MySpace is the worst web blog available.

Oh the irony...

So you like my signature, do you now?
The Article referenes Sysomos first.
The first survey looked at financial data, international scope and economic value added the second reworked numbers DO NOT include this. Apple ranked 20 when that criteria was put it. This survey takes in Social Networks and blogs.
This is how they reworked the numbers to put a different spin on it & it did not include Twitter.
"Sysomos decided to re-evaluate the top 20 brands by their social media presence on blogs, forums and news sites. Sysomos did not include mentions on Twitter in this study. This obviously led to major changes to Interbrand's list. Google, which placed only 7th on the Top 100 Brands list, ranks 1st when it comes to social media mentions in 2009, while Coca-Cola, the #1 brand on the Interbrand list, ranks only 11th on Sysomos' list."
1. Google
2. Apple
3. Microsoft
Both this article and the rework on the numbers by Sysomos are irrelevant. How can you do a ranking from social media sites and leave out Twitter?
Link to Article. Doesn't look that rosy when you see how the numbers were worked.

Quadra 610, does this mean that Google has more "mind share" (your favorite buzz word of late) than Apple does? After all, Google does have a larger Market Cap now.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Google is perhaps the most universally known of all.
Surveys say anything you want them to. Web sites quote whatever survey they want to stir interest in their crap articles.

Alexa says that Myspace is a #11 site worldwide right now, Twitter is #13. Whatever your feelings are on them, to suggest they're not influential services is foolish.
