Does anyone know if the new iMac can also be used as an external monitor?
And he said no. Oh why do I bother with your denseness.
Speaking of denseness…
For the iMac to be used as an EXTERNAL monitor it has to have a display INPUT. The 21.5” only has display OUTPUT while the 37” has both INPUT and OUTPUT. Have you kept up this time?
Blu-ray penetration means absolutely nothing. HDMI is tapped out for the most part in regards to bandwidth.
The iMac 27" is Apple second display that's above HD resolution (the 30" being the other of course) this is going to be a trend going forward. Even HDMI 1.4 has limited bandwith for future computer displays (it does hirez but only 24fps)
Note the weakness once you get to 36 bits per pixel HDMI can't do over 24 fps unless it drops back to 2k resolution. At 4k resolution it's only suitable for cinema playback.
So it doesn't really matter how much Blu-ray or HDMI penetration exists today because the roadmap of HDMI is running out of steam and will fail once we have 10/12/14 bit displays for sale.
ANd what exactly would you play on that to witness all that visual glory? An iTunes movie? LOL?
Mini DisplayPort for video input and output (adapters sold separately);
Yes, I said "nice" about a half page later...if you want to zing me, ya gotta post faster.
Still though, HDMI with HDCP for certain would have been better then mDP and folks wondering if the PS3 really will work. Maybe, maybe not. I'm hoping yes since it shouldn't be hard to do HDCP on that port.
ANd what exactly would you play on that to witness all that visual glory? An iTunes movie? LOL?
This is exactly an excellent point. You'd playback video content as that's what HDMI is suited for. It wouldn't be the ideal resolution to achieve visual glory for DCC (digital content creation) or photo editing because you'd need to make sure you're refreshing the screen at a much higher rate.
The iMac is a computer first and foremost so I see Apple sticking with computer display interconnects.
Wow, I had amazing "luck". I should go buy a lotto ticket tonight.
HAHA
Being free and offering higher bandwidth, it will be the standard, though you can still buy a $1300 carbon fiber Sony Vaio that only has VGA, as well as all those cheap notebooks so it’s not it’s easy to kill old display options. Luckily DP is backwards compatible with them.

Speaking of which, what's up with DP and HDCP? Is it implemented in the spec, or, as you say, if it isn't hard to do, what does that entail? Licensing?

And I don't need an Adapter (which you pointed out you hate purchasing). I've had HDMI on my laptop and desktop computer for 2 laptops and 2 desktop PC's.

It's in the spec. 1.1 contains HDCP 1.3. But then so is audio. HDCP licensing is via an annual license. $15k? The keys themselves are $5K for 1 million key sets. There are testing fees and so forth but for Apple it all seems not that much.

Yes, the Vaio Z has HDMI, but where exactly did I state the Z series only had VGA?
I’m highly intrigued that out of all of Sony’s products why you just grabbed the first Sony machine that didn’t have VGA and actually thought that proved my statement wrong. Between you and TeckStud’s reality adjacent posting I am truly amazed that you two can even use a computer.

True but what would you watch on the iMac itself - forget the HDMi / DisplayPort issue. Do you really want to hog up hard drive space with tons of HD digital movies like solipsism suggests we all do.

What's the equivalent rez/bpp/Hz matrix for DisplayPort? I'm not seeing anything that suggests that DisplayPort can do anything better right now. HDMI and DisplayPort have very similar bandwidth right now, don't they? I don't know how DisplayPort can magically do much better with (almost) the same bandwidth.

None that come with a computer that is available retail, mostly on FireGL or Quadro, and good luck trying to find a DP display.
You mean other than Dell?
Ultrasharp 3008WFP
Ultrasharp 2709WFP
Ultrasharp 2408WFP
Ultrasharp U2410
NEC EA231Wi-BK 23"
Dell P2310 23"
Dell P2210 22"
and then I got tired of clicking.

Gp back to your iTunes near HD quality movie.
In my reply to you in post 573.
Let’s try this one more time, but I’ll go a little slower and user smaller words.
Where did I write that the Vaio Z only had VGA? Note that I stated no such thing.
I wrote that a Vaio still only VGA despite its high cost. I did not state that all Vaios only had VGA.
Are you seeing how reading is fundamental?

They haven't sold the original Vaio in about 3 years (I'm guessing).
Go to Sony.com. Every single Vaio sold today, including their P series starting at $849 has HDMI standard.
Get over it. You are wrong.
Edit. Are you seeing how checking your facts are Fundamental, as well as reading & understanding them before you spew a line of BS?
