    256 more RAM

    20gigs more HD

    superdrive not a cd-r

    AND

    200mhz faster

all for $1000? Sounds good to me.

Apple can also neuter the iMac G4 by not giving it L3 cashe of even keeping it at 100MHz bus speed. THis would make your point about performance moot esp. if Apple puts in DDR on the towers...

Apple makes a bigger margin on "Pro" comps, naysayers have a point with taking away sales from pro machines. But a G4 iMaac WOULD NOT DO THIS

Those specs semi-believable, if not original.

I think the iMac will get a 15" LCD, however. Apple surely has gotten much feedback concerning the size of the current iMac's display. Furthermore, it would be odd for Apple to give the iMac a smaller display than one of their laptops, wouldn't it? Yeah the current iMac does, but when it came out, it's display was larger than any of the laptops, no?

As for the powermacs, I doubt the Apollo will scale to 1.4 GHz. The most optimistic rumor I've seen for the Apollo G4s is 1000, 1133, 1266 MHz. I suppose it's possible that there will be a 1399 version, but usually Motorola delivers CPUs that are one increment LOWER than expected.

Also, I find it very odd that part numbers are included. Why is it necessary to report them? And why would a compUSA employee bother giving them? It only serves to narrow down the source of the NDA breach.

And of course, if checked the part numbers will probably prove to be wrong.

"are" is the proper plural in Britain, and possibly in Canada as well.

As in, "Apple are a manufacturer of computers."

This use extends to other verbs as well:

"Apple have released an update to their Power Macintosh line."

Used to post from KY16 9QT, so I learned a thing or two about collective nouns

And now I post from 43216, so I know how they do it in the USA. There is a "location" field under a person's name, you know...

When you say "proper plural" do you mean "approporiate" or proper as in "proper noun".

Either way it makes no sense. I know there are language and dialect differences between the US and GB but actual written Grammar differences too?

JYD - but they have gotten feedback for 3 years that the 15" CRT was too small, and never addressed that. Also, doesn't the TiBook already offer better resolution - and more physical screen realestate than an iMac?

besides, everything else about it seems pretty good, so they need to disappoint somehow. The 14" LCD almost akes me believe it.

that said, if its a very high res 14", like the iBook's resolution, then what the hell.

Off topic, but just to clear things up...

"are", in this case, is a plural verb agreeing with a "collective singular noun", used when a (singular) noun actually refers to a bunch of people; the most common use of this is in the phrase, "the government are...", which you will see a lot if you read any British news source online.

There are many formal grammatical differences between US and UK English. I had a number of British tutors in college, who nailed me repeatedly for my American grammar.

Well you mentioned how it is done in Britian and Canada so I mentioned how it is in the US

I tend to ignore spymac. I wonder where they got those specs from...

I'm hopeful that Apple will address the issue of screen size directly, in the following way:

Offer an iMac with all of the internals contained in a base unit, and a "snap on" display.

Apple can then offer two or three different displays for the iMac.

The advantage of this is twofold. First, it solves the problem of people passing up the iMac because of its screen size. Two, it allows Apple to update the screen sizes as the cost of LCD displays drops. Apple can change the displays with little development cost.

I think the reason that the current iMac has used the same display for three years is that to change the display would entail high engineering costs. The entire form would have to be redesigned, and then the motherboard would have to be changed, and engineering would have to go into ensuring that the unit cools properly without a fan.

With snap-on displays, Apple could change the display every 6 months without incurring high engineering costs.

Finally, there would be a certain coolness to an imac with a display that snapped on and off. Transporting it would be a cinch, aftermarket companies could make cases that held the base unit and the display. And of course, it would have to swivel around, for your viewing pleasure.

Back to reality, I bet Apple uses a 14" LCD, and raises the price to $1600 or more.

This scares me. I've talked to several ChumpUSA employees, at different stores, and all of them told me that the most common complaint about the iMac is it's screen size. One of them told me that he was convinced he could sell TWICE as many iMacs, if they had a 17" CRT display. That's 16" viewable. I asked them if Apple took feedback from them, and they said that they told Apple the same thing they told me.

What this tells me is that a 14" LCD iMac would be a failure in every sense of the word. Sales would not improve much from their current doldrums.

And the problem is, Steve Jobs loves tiny screens. Remember how long it took the original Mac to get a larger display? I believe it wasn't until Scully took over that the original Mac got a proper display! WTF!!!

I agree. Look at when they replaced the 17" CRT with 15" LCD screens. As much as I would hate to see it, I get a gut feeling that Apple is going to disappoint us in this respect. It's always bitter-sweet with Apple. They'll come out with an iMac design that will make you kill both your parents to have, but then put a 14" LCD screen to take all the warm fuzzy feeling you have and cram it up your ass!

Next thing they'll come out with is a G5, all spec'ed to the max and garnish it with feathers!!

I agree that in general grammar and spelling on the web are atrocious, and I often want to yell at people making simple mistakes on these boards, but as many have already pointed out, this ("are" as opposed to "is") is a legitimate usage.

I remember in a class I was teaching, one student complained about the mistakes in the textbook -- things like "honour" and the like. Of course, the author was British.

Anyway, about the topic at hand, these do seem like relatively realistic specs, except for the DVD-ROM and CD-ROM iMacs being the same price. I would think that they would get rid of all of the drive options and just have combo drives (and perhaps a simple CD-ROM for a low-end model).

Of course there is no way that they would reduce the size of the screen in the CRT imac, if only because this would require a retooling of the case and the manufacturing process for no good reason. It could be a "viewable" measurement though, to make the LCD screens look more impressive.

if Apple don't have a G5 (which i'm convined they don't) they can't stick a G4 in a iMac. It would take sales away from the PowerMac G4. Yes, they could put a low Mhz G4 in but then everyone would moan that it wasn't a GHz one. I use a 867 G4 at the studio and an 400Mhz G3 at home. To be fair theres not a gaping speed gap between them, the G4's faster but i really notice the difference. Not everyone wants to render and photoshop on a iMac, i do that on my G4. I'd be chuffed at home with a 1Ghz G3.</strong><hr></blockquote>

explain to me how a iMac clocked the same speed as the lowend Powermac with the same chip (G4) would "take away sales" from the PowerMac when you are stuck with a set screen size and have no expansion.

    think.

do you not remember when the iMac sahred the G3 with the PowerMac?
