Is there any way to switch the iPhone mode off when browsing AppleInsider - permanently? Because really just a little bit too much annoying. Please.

I'll add to why it's annoying.
1) Half the time the links send you to the wrong articles. Doh!
2) Then there is that awful AI web toolbar. Whenever it actually shows up it just gets in the way. Just get rid of it.
No offense but I'd recommend looking at Ars Technica's mobile site to see how they do it well.
