I'm not a fan of Giz's posters but they do find some really interesting things.

Perhaps there would be a place for a specialist section that pass through at least a cursory filtering process.

Certainly like internet blogs - you have to be discriminating about where you source your content. Perhap Apple will have an independent section which will allow voting and commentary about indie books and authors... wait! Don't they do that in the iTunes Store already???

That is impressive. I still wonder what you do in countries outside the US. If iBook App is available only in US, how do you read the ePub books you already own using the iPad?

Maybe because it's- "free" and I want to read it.

    What's weird about that? \

Is that sarcasm? Not sure. My point here is that the two mediums are different. The bar is higher for music because more people can write than can play an instrument, and I would say more people have pretensions to be an author than to be a musician. Also you can usually tell as soon as ten or fifteen seconds into a track if it's no good or not to your taste, but it would take longer to read into a book to form the same opinion. Admittedly that is how it works to some extent in publishing already, which is why you tend to find explosions and dramatic events on page one of most pot-boilers, but if anyone could put anything in the store and call it 'a book' Apple will have to keep building data centres because they will keep filling up! Faced with 100,000 sci-fi titles by unknown authors where would you begin?

I think there would have to be some filtering mechanism specific to books, not for any nefarious reason but just to make the self-published section of the bookstore workable.

I think this is cool. Nothing wrong with reading (unless it's Sarah Palin's book.)
