So this comparison seems to show that the Nexus One is better in most of these categories.

...and then the Nexus 2 will come out after that, then the iPhone 5.0 and so the cycle continues, technology advances...

    Agreed.

    Nexus One = Total Failure.

    It's not even worth discussing.

Depends on what you mean by "total failure". It didn't sell as well as the iPhone, no doubt, but it's done a lot of good for Android in general.

It was basically Google's "showcase device" for Android 2.1 running on high-end specs. In that regards, it was a success. Financially, it's also a success for Google.

The other way I look at it is that all the newer high-end Android devices are pretty much mirror images of the Nexus One. Something to be said if the manufacturers are picking similar hardware specs.

It is subjective. But I'm willing to bet the farm that it's the subjective opinion of nearly everyone who has ever owned an iPhone or iPod Touch (and used apps frequently). And that's a lot of people. The people who think Android phones are the best thing in the world are generally people who resisted the iPhone to begin with. Or maybe guys who want lots of porn apps.

We all know the 3GS is going to be replaced in a couple of months. Here's what the Nexus will be competing against in processor (likely) in mid June

It doesn't appear that Apple has to worry about the Nexus. The A4 and current iPhone OS are good performers.

I agree it's the subjective opinion of those people, seeing as they bought the iPhone.

There's a reason why people "resisted" the iPhone, don't you think? I'd be willing to bet that they generally fall under:

    1. The people that want to dictate what their phones can and can't do, what it looks like, whether it has a physical keyboard or not or where they get their apps, etc, etc.

    2. People that don't want an iPhone because of the carrier it's on (more so in the US than worldwide).

Plus Android continues rise in the amount of people using it on various devices, so there's something to be said about that. Say what you will about it, but it's my opinion that Android as an OS will surpass the iPhone in the near future.

I know it's off topic, but what's wrong with porn? It is a billion dollar plus industry, after all. I like that I'm treated by Google as a responsible adult and given the choice to be able to install those apps if I see fit. Just remember, you do have the biggest porn app in the world on the iPhone as well. Safari.

Looks like AMD vs. Intel all over again... For the near-future, you're right. But no one knows the performance of the reported-to-be-released 1.3 GHz and 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processors this year.

Like hill60 said, the competitors release a faster processor, Apple trumps, then competitors trump Apple's trump. Rinse and repeat. We as consumers just get more and more powerful devices, whatever our OS preference.

Based on this comparison, they don't have to do much. Really.

Nexus One has faster CPU and more RAM, but iPhone 3GS has faster GPU. It's a wash as Nexus One would be faster for CPU bound apps while iPhone 3GS will be faster for GPU bound apps. Not only that, AndroidOS seems to have some sort of stupid non-optimization on scrolling making it feel like stop motion. It's like 15 fps or something. Choppy and makes it feel like you don't have much MHz powering it.

Cost of ownership is just stupid. It makes me cringe whenever I see total cost of ownership where the service plans include unlimited voice. I pretty much ignore it. It's not meaningful. The market will trend towards the minimum cost of ownership, which are basically the same for all carriers. About $70 for a basic voice plan with data plan. Voice is simply a second order driver in today's world.

The cost per gram, CPU Hz, pixels are just stupid. Really just plain stupid. Guess what, iPhone 3GS would win in terms of cost per apps available, cost per installable app storage, cost per storage, and who knows what other meaningless cost stat I can come up with.

I guess first month sales didn't contribute to your statement that Nexus One is superior.

For talk time, or really, battery life, the iPhone 3GS wins. Apple is typically good at meeting or getting close to its advertised battery life. Everyone else basically not so close. Anandtech's comparison shows that the iPhone 3GS has 28%, 57%, 44%, and 3% longer battery life in 3G web browsing, WiFi web browsing, video playback, and 3G talk time.

The battery replacement is a wash. Want to have more battery life? The usage pattern is the same. Nexus One user carries along an extra battery in their pocket or bag. iPhone use carries an external one in their pocket or bag or uses a case with battery integrated like the Mophie Juice pack. Not really a big deal.

The touchscreen quality on the iPhone 3GS is better than the Nexus One. Or any other touchscreen phone for that matter.

The display is interesting. The Nexus One display on the one hand has something like a 800x480 Pentile subpixel arrangement, which can make for some crap interpolation and dithering. The subpixel arrangement doesn't make for great text rendering. The OLED isn't good for outdoors. The OLED doesn't really save on batter life. Bah, I really hope Apple uses an IPS display for the next gen, not OLED. On the other hand, it does have deeper blacks and a higher pixel count.

Anyways, iFixit is just having some infotainment fun here. It's not a serious comparison. Is the Nexus One superior to the iPhone 3GS? It really depends on the user. Social networking, internet radio listening, "open" loving people would probably like it better. People who have issues with the lack of polish of Android and who like all of the cool apps would like iPhone 3GS better. In aggregate, I don't think the Nexus One is superior to the iPhone 3GS, just different.
