Well, if you REALLY want my opinion: I would never use merely 3 Gyros for teleportation -- mainly because 32 Gigs of RAM are not enough data buffer for moving a Pimple across the room, much less losing Scotty and coming back years later to re-materialize him.
You've got to think ahead when you are a star ship captain.
3 Petabytes would be just enough to have the computer THINK about doing it. That is, to move the pimple.
Well, since I have to wait for the iPhone 4 to be out for awhile and then be on eBay, I'm going to see what the next gen of the iTouch is. Will they have the 5MP cam & video there, too? Unknown.
Now the 32GB iTouch is $300 & no cam or video and the iOS4 is coming to it but none of the new hardware.
So, if the next iTouch doesn't have what the iPhone 4 has, then I would consider going to eBay & getting one. If I were to add up all the separate features for buying at least 3 other pieces of equipment, then just paying the extra for it might even cost me less and it's all-in-one.
So YES to your question!
And, I would still be using my Verizon phone. Oh, maybe by the end of the year or early next year....One can only hope.
Nope. I was hoping to replace three devices (phone, Palm TX and iPod) with one. Going to Android means I'll be able to reduce that to two, but the iPod won't get retired. I won't be able to go to an iPod + iPhone setup (even later) because there's only one checkbox per item in iTunes to manage what does and doesn't get synced.
I am liking this refresh. I wouldn't call it revolutionary. To me that was the first iPhone. But it's one hell of an evolutionary update. It's certainly a bigger leap than 3G to 3GS.
Most of the features to me are evolutionary. But I think the screen, the camera's video features and the gyroscope deserve some special mention. That's about the only hardware on this that I think really stands out.
I am bit skeptcial about the video calling. I've had it on several phones now. Never used it. Why? Because nobody else I knew had the feature. It'll largely be iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. But hopefully, Apple can help popularize the feature. And it'll be great for skype video chats. I am curious why they kept it wifi only though. That really, really limits usefulness of the feature.
On the software side, I find video editing to be huge. This might well take photo/video editing mainstream.
All in all, a good job.
Apple has submitted their methodology to the appropriate standards body. Hopefully, it will be approved (likely it will), and then other manufacturers can use it too, so interchangeability will come at some point.
Meanwhile, you'll just have to be content chatting with one of the 100 million or so who will be buying this in the next 18 months or so (including iPod Touch buyers).

I also wonder how much simpler it will be to get your music on a Droid than an iPhone, if it's too much work to use a playlist setup on iTunes to manage two iOS devices?
If you look closely in the photos shown by Jobs during the Keynote, vs. those on Apple.com in the iPhone 4 gallery, at the screws between speaker/mic and 30-pin connector port, we see standard Philips screws in the keynote, vs. 5-point screws on the website. What gives?
Didn't notice from the crappy photos from the keynote, but I would trust the website.
I think this is where 'cloud' storage will come into play.
Geeze - got to smack my own forehead.
When you say; "This is where Cloud storage will come into play" -- I immediately translate that to; "This is where AT&T's 'Unlimited' bandwidth option that is capped at 50 gigs a month will come into play."
It could be a 5 gig cap. I don't really know because I've been holding off on muggings and AT&T data plans for a while now until I really get the urge.
I am really excited about it -- if it was onsale today (instead of June 24), I would go get it now. rright now. Just ditch the meeting I have in 7 min and go.
but it isn't, so I'm gonna whine about my one complaint:
only 32G. I waited 2 years and only am getting 32G. The touch has had 64G for a year; I'd cheerfully pay an extra $50 for 64G.
(grumble, grumble)
I quite agree. Me too. I can only guess they're worried about touch sales being cannibalised and the iPad looking outmoded already. But what happened to the 80GB that was meant to be in the lost/stolen version?
What I'm surprised at is that they don't have a private WiFi station there just for the demos.
I'm sure they do. But all that radio in the air has to wreak havok. Now, next year I'm sure they will hack a router to give them a channel outside the standard 11, but it would have been a pretty smart planner who thought of the possibility of 500 wifi networks. That's got to be a very unique situation!
WE can't accurately discern 15-bit color, but you put anyone on a 32-bit monitor with Apple's latest hardware, and then have them look at the "alleged" 24-bit displays from 1998 (Intel's CPU architecture could ONLY use 15 bits for graphics).
You might not know THAT particular purple from something right next to it -- but you FEEL the difference. It's like the eye-strain you get from looking at a monitor at 60 hz -- higher MHz causes less eyestrain.
A lot of monitors actually dither neighboring pixels. If you have a true 32 bit display -- continuous tones are smooth. But if you had a textured image -- no, almost nobody could tell a 16-bit from a 32 bit. And MOST people think OLED is awesome because it's got like 16 over saturated colors and crushed blacks.
But there are people who have been trained as artists, and we don't pee yellow, it's more of a puce color. We care dammit!
32 bit displays are generally 24 bit color, and an 8 bit overlay for graphic controls, etc.
It depends on the video card. Most won't support more than 8 bits per color, a few do 10 bits. but it's mot complex than that. how does the display manage color adjustments? It can cut the number of bits from a channel when adjusting that color. It's better if a display allows you to adjust the LUT (look-up table) instead of adjusting the brightness of a channel. We didn't have that problem with analog displays, but we do with digital.

It could be a 5 gig cap. I don't really know because I've been holding off on muggings and AT&T data plans for a while now until I really get the urge.
Could be a whole new system. Apple could have a deal in place with AT&T where streaming from and uploading to the 'cloud' wouldn't count against data usage.

It doesn't really matter if it's on a different channel.
You'll be singing a different tune when you upgrade to iOS 4 and your phone slows down, while the rest of us are taking pictures with a flash, video, and enjoying the hot new glass case. Video chat will be a lot of fun for people with far off families. With as much as we spend on the service, saving $100 on the phone is very hard to justify. You save $100 and in return get worse experience every single day - would it be worth 30 cents per day over the course of a year? I have a hard time seeing how it wouldn't be.
Just be real careful not to bend that nice slim phone.
(Disclaimer: this person could easily have been blowing smoke up my a$$)
I went after lunch with my co-worker to replace her lost phone at a local T-Mobile store and the subject of the new iPhone came up. He looked at me confused and said something like "what, they made the announcement?" When pressed he said that T-Mobile would be getting the iPhone by the end of the month. When I asked him if there would be any other carriers he said "Yes, Verizon"
Don't know that I believe him, just writing what he said.
That's so WEIRD! You NEVER hear of salesmen saying things like that!
Well, it is a developers' conference. Maybe he'll just get a little extra review love for his apps. You know, like what they affectionately refer to as the GV protocol.
Good point. If the guy had done this on the Apple Campus, THEN he would have been taken out back and beaten to a pulp.
Seriously. Give me a break - you honestly think ANYONE at Apple HQ heard that and said "gee you know what, some people really are unhappy with ATT". Cmon!
Yes I sure do.
Why do I read the postings at Apple Insider? I read comments here, at YouTube, at 9 to 5 Mac because this is real. This is grass roots. This is the Apple community saying what they feel to be true. The people here have no reason to lie. We are not paid by Apple to say nice things like MacWorld or MacLife might be.
I do think the people at Apple are aware of an undercurrent of discontent with AT&T but might underestimate how strong that current is. I think they listened to that man today, I think they listened to the crowd's reaction to the Verizon comment. I think they listened to the crowd's reaction last year then AT&T announced tethering for other countries outside the USA, and the crowd booed.
And I think Apple listens to what we say here. I think they have people, either on the payroll or not, that listen to what people say in forums and look for opportunities to make better products.

Your iTunes doesn't allow you to use playlists?

It would seem as thought they would just pick the channels they wanted to use, and lock them from other use. That should solve the problem.
The first part is easy. The latter? How exactly do you lock a wifi channel?
