Ah well, it was an honest statement by me. If they didn't have to deal with the antenna debacle the queues would by definition be bigger, because I for one would be in them.

btw, here in Japan there is only a week wait for the reserve system. Friend reserved last week and picked it up yesterday.

BUT still no white which is what I'm holding out for. I've already waited 3 years for this iPhone 4 so I can wait another month or so for the white. Hardly anyone will have the white. Should look pretty cool.

Here in Japan, I did preorder my iPhone on the 18 (so more than 2 weeks ago) and I still don't now when I'll get my iPhone.

A friend preorder it on the 17 and didn't got it either (he should get it in less than a week, but nothing sure).

So I'm curious to know where your friend got his'

Yes. I live in a country that has not yet seen the iPad or the iPhone 4...

They don't produce enough of them.

People here are still buying 3GSs because they can't wait.

Maybe that's the plan. All leftovers from the US gets rerouted to other countries waiting months for the next model. But that doesn't explain the iPad. No older model.

They have had plenty of time to ramp up production now I think.

Steve says they are doing all they can but it seems like this is a never ending story.

Mate it is so bloody frustrating I got a nice grey-market unit, iPad 32GB WiFi+3G from my local tech forum traders. It's a US unit. Cut my own MicroSIM. This thing is sweet. There was some raging going on about 256MB, and while there are some things on the iPad that could be "snappier", I think iOS 4.0 will take care of some of that, as well as developers being more familiar with the iPad. When I use the iPad, it is kinda back to Mac days, if it does most of what I can do with it, I'm not worrying about the specs, I tell you that. Though, the iPad 2, will be sweeter.

As for supply and demand, being in Malaysia we're around the middle of the heap of small-ish developing countries so who knows when anything gets here, besides Macs which are in reasonable official supply.

I honestly think Apple need not be making things too fast. Sounds selfish because I already have my iPad, but by the same token remember it will be months before any sign of official launch of iPhone 4 in my country.

The build quality and thoughtfulness of the iPad is quite reasonable. Reliability so far of the millions of units being produced seems reasonable. The iPhone 4 has been churned out at some serious pace. This led to many compromises, some public, maybe some not so public. Remember as well Apple has to deal with support, supply, service and all sorts of related stuff.

At the end of the day, I think it is nice that Apple is building the iPad platform that will be the post-Mac platform in the mobile space, as Mac becomes more and more consumer-oriented (with a slight nod towards pro use... slight... heck of a lot of music, video, photo pros do use PCs or other things like Avid... this is an entirely different debate, of course).

So the iPad is selling about more or less equal to the number of Macs being sold. As it is launched in more countries, it will start to outpace the Mac. Of course Apple should ramp up iPad production, which it is doing, but not at the unnecessary cost of quality.

Good job. I sense a shift in the Force. Ireland is slowly coming back to our side (whichever that is).

I'm still somewhat aggravated about the The Great Antenna Debacle but my iPad seduces me into not thinking about it too much.

What's that dear? No, not now, I'm on my Macboo... No, don't misunderstand, it's just... OK darling, I'll be back to web surfing on you very soon... I promise.

I'm sure Apple is internally gearing up for about 15 million by the end of 2010, should there be no major production issues. The holiday quarter (Q1 FY2011, Oct-Dec 2010) will be blowout for iPad and iPhone4, good Mac sales but eclipsed by iPad sales, I think. Again, assuming no major production/ quality issues.

    According to Anandtech:

So, an entire day and more than a quarter tank of gas later, here are the results. Holding the iPhone 4 without a case, in your left hand, crossing the black strip can result in a worst case drop of 24 dB in signal.

Now, there are two vastly different possibilities for what happens to the bar visualization after you drop 24 dB. I happen to live less than one block from an AT&T UMTS tower (it's across the street, literally), and have exceptionally strong signal in all of my house - it's part of why I chose to live here, actually. Signal is above -65 dBm in every single room, in most cases it's at -51 dBm. When I incur that worst case drop of 24 dB from squeezing the phone, I fall down to -83 dBm, which is still visualized as 5 bars.

However, in locales that have less signal, but where iOS still displays 5 bars, the drop of 24 dB is visualized much differently. For example, at another test location, signal without holding the phone is -89 dBm, which is still displayed as 5 bars. Cup the phone, and you'll fall all the way to -113 dBm. All the bars dramatically disappear one after the other, people think they've dramatically lost all the signal, and you know the rest.

If you're at 4 bars already, (which puts you on the low end of possible signal strengths), cupping the phone even more delicately is enough to push you the remaining 10 or so dB to cutoff. It doesn't take much when you're at 4 bars, which is why the visualization is flawed. Complicating matters is that signal is completely fine until down around 2 bars at -107 dBm.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, by now several million ppl are using the iPhone 4 without issue. I think your refusal and/or disinterest in buying one has more to do with the fact that that you've dug in your heels than the "antenna" and would lose too many ego points if you bought one. When you grow up, your ego gets in the way less and it's easier to admit you were wrong.

The rest of the Anandtech reports goes on to say that basically, iPhone 4 reception is improved over the 3GS.

Until I can just walk into a store and just pick one up the item remains constrained, at least to me!

As a point of interest: I was in a Best Buy (US Hwy 75 in Plano, TX) on Sunday and the store had a white board just inside the door proclaiming the in-stock availability of iPad WiFi and iPad WiFi + 3G (Sorry, I don't remember the memory capacities). Already have mine, but if you're in Plano, check it out.

I want there to be an issue so I can be proven right? What a load of crap. I don't want this issue just as much as the next guy, I wanted to buy the phone. But Apple have proven themselves incapable of owning up to it, fixing it and facing it head on. I'll be holding out for iPhone 5, where, as I have said: "the antenna on iPhone 4 was perfect, but for some reason the antenna in iPhone 5 is different". It's not about being right. It's about Apple fucking up and refusing to accept any blame.

When many Mac people are reporting the issue to be a problem then you can rest assured it is a problem. Arnold Kim; proprietor of Macrumors has the issue, it affects him in some places, not in all places. Leo Laporte has the issue. Erica Sadun; respected writer of TUAW has the issue. Insanely Great Mac has the issue even when using a Microcell. It seems to be location specific and affects those who don't like to use a case the most. If that's good enough for you then fine, but it ain't good enough for me. And no, they don't simply have dropped bars, they have dropped calls in places where the old iPhones didn't have them - when they hold the phone a certain way without a case, which as luck has it happens to be the natural way to hold the phone.

Dug in my heels and can't get out? Pure crap.

I'm in the UK, and Vodafone (one of the five networks that have the iPhone 4 here) called me today asking if I wanted an iPhone 4. I couldn't take them up on it as I didn't have a PAC (to transfer my number to them). But they said they were getting about 30,000 a week and expected to be able to deliver ordered phones within a week.

than given on the original order from Apple. So, instead of waiting til the 20th for arrival, it should be here next Monday the 12th. So I think that Apple overstated the delivery dates to delight their consumers... That's fine. I'm delighted!

So your basic strategy is that as long as you don't have an iPhone 4 you are going to make it miserable for everyone else.

Reminds me of the guy that was going to walk from Dublin to Cork because he was frustrated with Apple couldn't get his iMac to work. The last thing I heard, he is still complaining.
