Some people need to remember this is a RUMOR site. Not everything you read here will come true. Not everything you read here is how Apple will use it.

    PLEASE REMAIN CALM.

It is quite obvious that the next iteration of AppleTV would be based on iOS. If so, that opens up iAd for Apple TV as well.

In such a scenario, Apple could potentially be looking at offering a deal similar to Hulu - watch iAds every 15 minutes of the show and get the show for free, or watch 2-3 minutes of iAds to begin with and get the show for free, or just pay $1.99 to watch the show without ads.

Most comments in this forum assume that this is targetting MacOS - as customers, we have already paid for MacOS - with what is generally considered as the Apple Tax - so there is no reason for Apple to expect us to watch ads on a Mac.

But for AppleTV, this could be gold - people are used to PAY for cable TV, and still be forced to watch Ads. So any option from Apple, where you get FREE cable TV in exchange for viewing ads would be more than welcome.

The time is ripe for Apple to open their OS to clone makers again. Restrict licences to desktops amongst a few manufacturers only. This may tempt in a whole new demographic and increase market penetration. Their desktop sales are dwindling and MacOS needs to be on feature competitive machines for gamers, OCers, etc.

In regards the advertisement in your signature ... how can it be "Honest Apple News & Opinions," if it's called "applebitch"? There is obvious bias right in the title. That's like, the opposite of "honest."

great idea for Internet cafes or something, they could offer discounted rates (or even free) in exchange for the client watching ads

I?m still not convinced this concept is ready to work but this surely would give Apple another avenue for revenue. I think iAds is a good foundation for this concept.

Note, this OS option would likely mean that it?s tied down like iOS and other mobile OSes, which would be fine for most users. In fact, I can see them scrapping Mac OS X altogether here (for this option) in favour of iOS compiled for x86 with a new UI idealized for the setup. I have to think anyone running a free OS would not need to the faster HW available so a simpler OS might be key here.

PS: This thread is already filled with trolls and asshats stating how great it is to be a Linux user and how they?d switch if Apple offered an add supported option to increase profits.

    Two points

    1. Will I need to tape my eyelids back while using it?

    2. Anyone filing a patent so as to prevent others from doing something should have a red hot poker swiftly inserted up their back vestibule. It is an obscenity, an outrage and stifles innovation and progress.

Right. Apple patents lots of junk that never sees the light of day. A good example is that most of Apple's patents involving tablet computing didn't make it into the iPad either, and they probably never will.

Anyway, I don't see how this could possibly work unless the OS is a thin client. People will just hack it and disable the advertisements part. Unless they are going to use that server farm to start serving desktop Mac OS-X to customers next year this makes no sense at all.

It's an interesting idea, (that they might use the server farm to serve all their software rather than stream iTunes multimedia), but kind of unlikely.

Perhaps rather it's a handy thing to "invent" and patent to block others from doing it.

Cause you know there are companies who only make bank on ads, said companies might be looking at releasing an OS that would serve as another channel for their spam engines.

Might be difficult to gain traction when Apple, who makes their money by actually making things not just selling ads for Porn and fake drugs puts up a tasty patent block.

I for one think this a great patent, more like it are needed to stop such companies from completely choking the whole global network with legalized spam.

Definitely the most sensible post here. Google, one of Apple's major competitors, thrives on plastering everywhere, and they're trying to creep their way into every place possible; why not make their lives a little harder?

These people panicking and going "Apple is going to force ads all over the place in the next OS! I'm moving to Linux!" are really making some wild assumptions that have no basis in reality.

You mean it's not enough that we see uncountable ads when we use the web? And what if there's a problem with the purchase option and you are stuck watching ads even though you've paid for the software? This would be incredibly annoying and I would never buy an OS that required you to watch ads before you could get anything done.

LOL they just want to patent the idea before Google puts it into Chrome OS

I doubt if the economics of an ad-supported public computer would make it viable. Remember, unlike a tv in an airport passenger waiting area, computers are single viewer/user machines. How many pairs of eyeballs will see an ad each day? How much would an advertiser be willing to pay for such a limited audience? Would that be enough to pay for the computer and the internet connection?

The application describes an operating system that would present the user with an advertisement, preventing them from doing basic functions on the system for a set period of time. At the conclusion of the advertisement, the user would be able to resume their activities on the machine.

Looks great at a nuclear plant or to stop a bomb, 'read this advertisement first' then continue with next step.

I hate the idea of ads in my OS too. However, there is no evidence yet that they will be mandatory but rather may just be optional to reduce the retail price. Or, as others have speculated, it may only be a strategy for public terminals, in which case it makes sense. So far, it seems like we may still have the option to cough up the cash and be ad-free. Anything else would a disaster of monumental proportion. Waiting for more info....

It seems more like something Apple patented so they could make some money off of Google in the future. There will not be an AD version of OS X, so everybody threatening to switch to Linux needs to get their panties out of a bunch.

I think there could be an Ad version of an Apple OS based off OS X, but I don?t see any reasonable conclusion to think it would be ?Mac OS X?.

I can barely stand the idea of this on my iPhone or iPad.

If this *actually* comes to pass as part of OSX on the Mac, it's time to seriously reconsider.

    Yuck!

What's next? 'Intel Inside' or Nvidia stickers on the palm rests of the MacBook Pro? Apple your corporate culture is becoming more and more Microsftian by the minute. Steve and company might have to start looking into buying some brown suits!

Will the real "Mac" please stand up!

I know the article talks about Public Use of "free" computer use but I thought Apple was all about "User Experience"! Why for the sake of having a Mac computer or other present day or future Apple devices would Apple want to be a lemming and follow the rest of the crowd so intensely. Is Apple more about becoming Google then Google becoming Apple? Will there no longer be a differentiation between Apple, Microsoft, and Google?

This seems more of a money grabbing scheme in the hopes that use it here buy a Mac later. But still, not the Apple I know or want to know. Imagine going to a grocery store and they are offering free samples BUT FIRST you must hear a sales pitch before you get that piece of cheese on a stick or granola crunch in that paper cup!

Again, Steve and company, need to look into buying those suits!

How did "patenting the heck out of iPhone" work in making Android OS and all the Google phones from HTC, Motorola et al hitting the market any harder? \

I agree. This looks like a deathstroke patent aimed directly at Google's Chrome or Android. Brilliantly played, Apple!
