AirPlay and AppleTv won't play your Apps on the TV, only media can be streamed from iDevices to the TV screen. The AppleTV can also stream media from your computer also. Using a Mac Mini has a media center does enable the playing of MacOSX games on the big screen, plus internet games.
I completely missed the keynote - so does this mean we might at some point be able to stream from Mac to iDevice? Or am I missing that I can already do that? What I really want to be able to do is stream from my NAS that is able to share my music over DAAP to my iPhone. I could do this with my old N800 using UPNP, so SURELY is must be possible for iPhone?
i think this is the first step (well second... cos first was AirTunes :P )... towards the idea that iPhone/iPodTouch/iPad can be stream everything onto Apple TV.
Imagine being able to actually view ur stuff on the tv!? playing games, using ur applications! etc etc ...
WHOA that would be humongous! NICE... i would LOVE to see this happen!!
What say guys!?
Well this is why a few people on this forum are disappointed with the new Apple TV's functionality. Apps on the TV would be great but i have a feeling it won't happen anytime soon. I think you can throw a web browser in there for good measure as well.
But i was thinking last night what sort of games, currently in the app store, would benefit from streaming the ipod/ipad/iphone to the Apple TV.
I'm not a big gamer by any stretch of the imagination. Angry Birds is about my level. Now imagine that on the big screen? It would be hard to concentrate because you'd have to navigate the catapult on the device, which means viewing it on the device, and then watching the result on the big screen.
Doesn't seem that intuitive to me. PS3's games are designed for the big screen with simple remotes with no visual function. With practice become a natural part of the fingers, whilst the eyes and ears focus on the big screen.
So we'd have to have a different type of game wouldn't we for this type of streaming that people seem to want? So it's certainly not as clear cut as one might think.
So the app has to stream a video file that Apple TV can read, I don't see how that makes it impossible. Any app that opens up the video player on an iOS device is reading a compatible video file isn't it? Why couldn't it stream that video to Apple TV?
Bandwidth is not unlimited. The iDevices have hardware assist for decoding h.264 video format. There is about a 100:1 compression involved so uncompressed video would need about 100 times the bandwidth. One could try compressing to h.264 on the fly but there is not hardware support for compression, just decompression. Elgato does make a USB dongle that does hardware assisted h.264 compression but I don't know if even that is fast enough. Of course just about all technology improves if you are willing to wait a while.
I hope someone jailbreaks AirPlay and makes me a windows/osx/unix daemon that'll finally allow me to stream mkv's (converting on the fly) from my mac to an appletv.
Apple is setting us up. Airplay is not the end game here. Airplay is Apple putting us in a holding pattern until they can get their ducks in row for apps on the AppleTV.
Netflix will have an app. HBO will have an app. Comedy central. MLB. NFL. Hulu. Even Amazon.com unbox. Everything will be an app on the appletv. And then the apple tv will have tons of video content on demand (presumably in 720p).
Apps on the appletv is the end game as far as this product goes. Apps will converge all iDevices into one big happy family of app-driven devices delivering a clean, consistent experience to the end user with absolutely zero learning curve required.
I guess it's NOT a no-brainer, so I have to ask: will I finally be able to stream music from my iPhone directly to my two ($79 each) Airport Express base stations?
Or is Apple going to require me to buy another device to perform this apparently simple function?
Ok, I have lots of computers in my house each with thier own speakers and 1 of them has 5.1 surround speakers. I just bought the new Apple TV on top of that... is there a way that I can stream to all of my computers the same way that I can stream audio to the apple TV?
I have seen the airplay "Multiple Speakers" in the bottom right corner, but I do not see my other computer listed (from either computer, only sees the apple TV). Each of the computers are connected with Home Sharing...
Anyone know of a way to do this? I'd like to have all of my speakers play music at one time...

You need Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba.
