Maybe they'll finally fix the Finder bug where you can't throw something away because it's "in use" - even when it's clearly not. Quitting an application just so you can empty the Trash is not the hallmark of an advanced OS.
I also wish they'd add a merging function to the Finder. Instead of replacing or overwriting items in a ?, it would be great to be able to merge folders without deleting anything.
This one isn't about 10.6.5: it would be nice to have a "private" function in iPhoto. Not "Hide" but an actual private folder.
Yes, I get that first issue there occasionally - either when I've dragged something as an attachment onto mail, or been viewing it in quickview. Quitting mail sorts the first issue, the quickview thing is very annoying, but it only happens on very rare occasions. Thought it was just me!
I'd like to see a complete logic shift in finder, something new. But no idea what. I've seen various ideas that complain to revolutionise the finder/desktop, but they're all bloatware and unnecessarily featured. I want it simpler, cleaner and no need to have multiple windows open.
NO, it's an incredible OS, perfectly stable no issues, far outperforming it's predecessor - what issues are you having that suggest this OS is somehow not release ready?
I'm running 10 27" i7 iMacs, each with 4 or 8 gigs of ram, all running CS5 ultimate collection, office and various other utilities/applications. No issue with any of the machines. Some of the creative suite can be a little flakey, but none of the USB connected intuous 2 have any issues, nor external USB harddrives etc. No issues at all. Do you understand that some people are always going to experience issues, and most of these are caused by other software and hardware, rather than the OS, but somehow it's always the OS that gets the focus. WHen thinking "My battery powered mouse hasn't worked so well since the update", your first thought should be "have I checked the batteries recently" rather than screaming "this update broke my mouse".
Yes, there are minor issues which affect some people with certain software/hardware configurations and these are being addressed. That is not "beta" software, it is an inevitable part of OS development that it will constantly need refining and bugs addressed as they are found.
It is not possible to test every configuration, every software combination and every environmental factor - the testing process would last two to three centuries...
I'm guessing Sleepy Dinosaur was being funny in reference to all the attention on iOS.

Now you mention that ... I had not seen that till the last few months and I seem to get it a lot now. Only a restart releases the file for deletion, not with with option held nor even a Finder reboot will. I am guessing it was a recent bug introduced at the last update but I could be wrong and simply never come across it. I have a file 'in use' as I type that won't empty from the trash so I know I'll have to reboot soon. I ran perms check and it's not that and even booted to another drive and checked the HD. Nothing seems to be wrong.
I have had a number of system freezes recently with 10.6.4 - no kernel panic screen - just total lock up. Started around the time I in stalled 64 bit versions of Flash Player Plug In.

If there is a Mac OS X 10.7 it will likely be the last traditional desktop operating system for Macs. And I believe it will be minimalist compared to OS X now (Think of QuickTime X as the precursor to the direction it will take). It's difficult even for me to think about it but the computer is no longer the focus of technology any more, for the entire industry not just Apple. All future efforts Apple puts into them will be secondary or less to the multitudes of iDevices that are to come.
You do realize that you need a full featured OS with a large monitor in order to develop iOS apps and HTML5 web code?
How about they fix the stupid stalling that happens when you have external hdd... I'm on the iMac 27" i7 with 8GB RAM - I bought it in January, worked fine until a few months ago. Now, I can't do anything without the spinning beachball of death. I want to save a file - any file - the stupid thing spins up all the external hard drives and I get the spinning beachball on a "save" dialogue! I want to launch the dictionary app - bounce in the dock 15 times, spin up all the external drives, beachball for 30 seconds... and so on. Sucks. I hate it. This is supposed to be a fast computer, but there's some kind of bug in the OS - I know they had a similar problem with the MBP where it would spin up any external drives and they issued an update to resolve it... well, I need that for the iMac.
The only hard crashes I have are when trying to run Wine. So thankfully haven't had the crashing issues alluded to by others.
As to USB fixes I'm hopping that means they fix the track pad from a few months back. That would be the one that gave us inertial scrolling and extra gestures on the early 2008 MBP. I really like the new features very much as they make for a much better user experience. How ever the bugs that crop up after awhile aren't so cute.
QuickTime has certainly been an issue. As others have pointed out it is buggy, and flaky. Worst yet it won't even play some movies it is suppose to play. On the otherhand I'm not going to sit here and say it needs to become VLC, there is no point in that. But playing common formats ought to be a goal even if they are Windows formats. I'm actually glad VLC works so well on the Mac, i just don't expect Apple to support every video standard that ever existed. Frankly they need to fix what they have first anyways.
All in all the things that bug me about SL the most though is the occasional UZi pauses and beach balling. These seemingly happen without explanation. I can have my machine loaded heavily (handbrake, Quicktime, and others) and never see a problem, yet i can be running what should be a light load and have all sorts of responsiveness issues. Makes no sense.
I'd like to think that my 2008 MBP is still serviceable and will remain so for a couple of more years but i honestly think 10.7 could sink this ship. Maybe by that time 10.7 will be completely built with LLVM & CLang. Hopefully the tools from that project will lead to a more agressive debugging and performance effort. I just have a hardtime tolerating a laggy GUI.
I've got bunches of old mpg movies. Ones taken back when mpg (and sorenson - yuk) was about the only game in town. And for the past several iterations of QT, scrubbing through an mpg movie now results in the dreaded spinning wagon wheel, often followed by a QT crash. Will they fix it this time? Doubt it. What am I supposed to do, re-encode to h.264 and further reduce the already marginal quality of those old mpgs?
Sorry for the rant, but QT is starting to bug me. You would think that Apple would make QT the number one video player on the planet, capable of playing anything, kinda like VLC. But no. They want to focus on stuff they want to promote and don't give a twit to the rest of the world who just wants one damn player that plays everything.
Just out of interest, why wouldn't you just use VLC? I agree with you that if QT is crashing/buggy it should be fixed, but do you see some benefits with QT that you don't have with VLC?

I agree with you. It's ages since I saw anything crash, it's really quite remarkable.
I wish that I could set my own time machine backup schedule without using a third party app, for one. Does verify backup actually do anything by the way?
I hope they fix the (*%#@%@#%ing NVIDIA drivers/graphics switching issue that hard crashes 2010 MacBook Pros. I have been saved by the ingenious, free, opensource "gfxCardStatus" which fixes the problem entirely, by disabling the automatic switching, just fyi in case anyone else has this problem, this fixes it! Apple seriously needs to hire that guy big time, they owe him.
Also it would be great (or...mission critical in business environments!!!) if they add write access (uploading) to FTP in Finder, and write access to NTFS drives. They are already there "under the hood". Turn them on already damnit. These shouldn't wait until 10.7. And yet somehow I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't even on by the time 10.7 is released.
Good to see USB devices on there, although I suppose many peripherals could fall under that heading. My Logitech mouse has been incredibly flaky since the 10.6.4 update, mostly in terms of drag-and-drop functionality. So for example, rearranging text in Word or dragging icons from .dmgs to the Applications folder can be a three-, four-, or five-attempt process.
Agreed; I've seen some really weird behaviour with my Wacom tablet - suddenly stop working but the problems were never present when I ran Mac OS X 10.5.8. From what it sounds like, when FreeBSD 5.x gradually removed the giant lock many bugs were uncovered as a result therefore I wonder to what degree are we seeing the same thing with Mac OS X - that there are bugs exposed which were once dormant or very intermittent when the kernel was more corse.
As for people going on about 'crashes' - how about differentiating between the whole operating system crashing (kernel panic) versus an application that crashes - because you sound as though the whole operating system is a buggy mess when in reality it has to do with the third party doing a crappy job with their software development.
macintoshtoffy that is a good point you make about specifying the type of crash. By hard crash I meant kernel panic requiring restart. It may be NVIDIA's drivers or it may be Apple's way of handling the switching between the Intel integrated graphics and the discrete NVIDIA 330m card. They could just integrate gfxCardStatus' capabilities into 10.6.5, problem solved.
?That crash just started appearing yesterday with the delivery of MacOS 10.6.4. (I found unknown crashes moving up the statistics earlier today and had engineers looking at them before lunch) It is related to OpenGL, and probably to a driver update delivered with 10.6.4. [...] you can either tell Apple that 10.6.4 introduced this problem, or just wait for us to document it and ask Apple to fix it and eventually get a fix in the next OS patch.?

Thanks for the props, glad gfxCardStatus is that useful to you! I actually just submitted my resume to Apple a couple days ago so we'll see what happens.

Will 10.6.5 reflect the changes made to iCal on the mobileme platform also on the desktop? iCal looks so outdated.
Don't count on any UI updates.
Facetime for Mac would be a start
You expect the customer to do an OS upgrade for a that application?

Will it fix the idiotic font and spacing issue on the Help Menu???
What issue? Looks fine here on 10.6.4. In fact I can't ever remember it not looking fine...
