Good, competition is what drives progress.

The bottom-line is, Apple is pretty much calling the shots in this industry.

That, in and of itself, is quite amazing, when you think about it (and honestly acknowledge it).

The DSLR's lenses were not only brighter (they let more light in), but the images were sharp and clear and detailed.

When I hear claims of 9MP I just don't buy it. With the tiny lenses and microscopic focal lengths in these smartphone cameras, I'm amazed that the iPhone 4's camera looks as good as it does.

Agreed. I find it laughable when someone compares phone cameras to professional DSLR cameras.

I'll take my Sony DSC-R1 10.3MP Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar Camera for work I want to edit later any day of the week.

Yet another phone that doesn't run Flash? I thought Apple was the only "crippled Internet" phone? Hmmm Adobe what's going on.... where's all the FULL INTERNET SMARTPHONES that's supposed to be making the iPhone obsolete?

Are they claiming the same pixel density that Apple is?

Big deal! And they also have the nerve to call the phone ISO3. What a joke.

Doesn't matter anyway cause I wouldn't touch that crap. I have the iphone 4 and there is nothing better.

Well, when it comes to Flash, it looks to be Apple that is leading the way, tons of these other phones also don't have Flash on it!

Any smartphone that can run Android 2.2 can run Flash 10.1. My Evo runs 2.2 and just got a recent update that removed the 30fps cap. As the lastest Android phones keep moving to 2.2 they will move to Flash 10.1 Apple is not leading the way Android is gaining on them at a rapid pace. Flash like it or not is very far from dead.

    1) As I recall, ASV had equivalent viewing angle as IPS, but also had lower power usage than IPS. However my info is surely a couple years old so that could have changed with advancements to IPS. Anyone have any updated info on these technologies.

    2) It’s interesting that they are also using the same aspect ratio as the iPhone.

    3) So are nearly-button-free smartphones gaining a lot of traction in Japan now, or is still mainly the iPhone at this point?

I think Apple choose such a high resolution so they could sit on it for several years, maybe even longer than the last iPhone which retained it’s resolution for at least a year too long. At least that need is pretty much gone for Apple for awhile.

For others, I’m sure they will exceed it. It’s the nature of technology mixed with marketing. Saying your display has a higher resolution than the smartphone industry’s pinnacle device is important to many. Epecially Android users, it helps them sleep better at night.

ASV is ASV, different from IPS. So, it's not the retina display, either.

So, what's happening to AppleInsider? Lousy reporting here.

    1) Your questions are either silly or were answered in the article so perhaps you need reread the article instead of blaming AI for your lack of reading comprehension.

    2) It is a Retina Display based on the definition giving by Jobs that a person with 20/20 vision can discern pixels from 10" to 12” away. If it’s been trademarked by Apple or LG then Sharp won’t be using it or will face the consequences. It’s not that hard.

That wouldn’t be a “Retina Display” You’d still need a 100ppi on each axis (or 10,000 more pixels per square inch) to match the iPhone’s display. RI would be great, but I wouldn’t RD in any notebooks until after it’s available for the iPad, which I suspect is still a good 5 years away.

This is a good thing. 300+ ppi is really the direction that all displays should be headed. It just makes sense. I agree with astrosmash: I want my retina display MBP.

I have an amp with an 11 on the volume dial to sell you.

Mine only goes to 10. I'd love one that goes just that one notch louder.

I wonder if they choose 2.1 because they need to create a custom resolution and aspect ratio for this device. I wonder how that will work for the current apps for Android. Are they designed to work with a 3:2 aspect ratio?

I asked Steve for a retina display for the iPad. No response. I'll take that as a yes

Maybe I don't understand you correctly, but can you explain what you mean by "device with the optics of a camera"?

How do you know this without other information about the device. Using your logic selling a 2MP camera is a waste of time

    So...

If Sony thought having 300dpi+ screens was good then why didn't they do it before?

This isn't competition. Competing is where you reach further.

This is where you dump your R&D team, read the news and base your designs on what already exists.

    It is pathetic.

Who's going to by a phone from Sharp?

All these wanna-be's do is validate the power of Apple.
