What about them? You don't NEED root for the phone to be useful. As I stated, there are utilities that can hide and/or disable carrier preinstalled apps without the need to root. And you can install any app you want, from the android market or anywhere else, again, without the need to root.

    WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!!?!?!?!?

The only time things like calls and the camera are non-functioning is when developers are trying to get a completely different version of the OS compiled and working on a phone it was never meant for - in other words, major hacking. Should Apple be criticized because the someone can't hack Ubuntu to run on the iPhone and make phone calls? Certainly not, but that's essentially what you're doing here.

And in the mean time, the phone is every bit as capable as an iPhone - and more, because no one is censoring what apps can be installed on it.

You guys would really do yourselves a favor to actually try to experience something outside your little world. If nothing else, you'd be more able to have an intelligent conversation on the subject, without continually relying on myths, misconceptions and outright fabrications in support of your platform choice.

And porn is the only thing Apple censors.... right.

It's not subjective for the utility apps if they only do a single basic thing but even weather apps and clock apps are redundant if they serve the same purpose. At the very least, they should segregate those basic apps as though they were widgets. They can easily determine this by the amount of code in the apps.

When would you consider it a problem? When we have 7,000 apps for turning the LED flash on? 70,000?

Clock apps you can say will have different designs, weather apps will have different layouts and graphics but they don't need to clutter up the store browse mode. Who is sitting there browsing through utility apps going 'clock app #1, hmm let's try it; no, let's try clock app #2... well, this is clock app #47, I'm not sure about this one or #22'. Nobody wants to do that, especially if you are browsing through apps to discover new ones.

Imagine if you went into a a store for clothes and the store did have a variety but as soon as you walked in, it was just a pile of shirts and at the front was a rack showing you the most popular shirts bought by other people. To actually get to some variety of content, you have to climb through the pile of redundant shirts. Now imagine you have to do this every single time you visit the store with a bigger pile each time. Pretty soon you'd think, nope there's probably good stuff in that store but I just don't have the time or patience to jump through that pile every single time to find something interesting.

Apple quoted their $1b revenue to developers like it was even a big amount. There are 120 million iOS users. That means every user on average spent just $8 on software. You'd spend that on one meal at McDonald's.

It's an epidemic. It's gotten to the point where developers are so desperate for traffic, they are just not bothering making innovative apps and copying Angry Birds.

We now have: Angry Talking Bird, Angry Cat, Angry Dog, Angry Pigs, Angry Scot, Angry Zombie Launch, Angry Sperms, Angry Panda, Angry Sticks, Angry Spiders, Angry Santa, Angry Hamster, Angry Viking, Angry Bombs, Angry Turkey, Angry Balls, Angry Bulls, Angry Turtle, Angry Box, Angry Elves.

But my absolute favourite has to be Angry Jumping Birdies:

Can't imagine where that idea came from. That's the kind of behaviour I expect when so few apps are promoted at the expense of so many.

I apologize, I took your statement, "With Android, revenue is generated*throughout the life of the game – from the original version and through all future updates advertising is present. revenue is generated*throughout the life of the game" to mean that ad based apps were only available on Android and not on IOS. When the same model can be used on the iPhone.

I disagree, maybe I'm wrong, but on iPhones the apps are vetted. To bypass this, one must hack/jailbreak the iPhone, most people will not do this since they do not have the knowledge or experience and fear bricking their phone.

Unless I'm mistaken, and I do make mistakes, on Android, downloading any app from virtually any source is one click away by clicking an option to download from sources other than the market. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that is my understanding. Hence all the websites advertising apps for Android that are not affiliated with the Android Market. If my understanding is correct than downloading from Limewire or Warez sites would also be possible without rooting your Android phone.

Just for fun I googled "Android maleware" and there was this interesting article.

Do MacAfee and Norton make anti maleware software for Android? Seems like they might hit a gold mine here (note: especially ad based software ).

Where did I sling mud? Yes, I incorrectly interpreted your original post, but sling mud?

What exactly is the iPhone knee deep in? Are you referring to the iPhone jailbreaking community?

I would imagine the cost to advertise to an entire group of people who are too cheap/poor to pay for a $1.99 app is really really ... REALLY cheap.

Me? I'd just clone Super Mario Bros and call it "Pissed-off Birds"

Now we await the posters who claim it?s a lie and how iOS is crap. to chime in.

Why does this not bode well for Android? Angry Birds apparently made about $9 million from their iOS versions. They expect to make $1 million a month in ads. If that hold out and it seems to from the last 2-3 months, then they will make as much as or more than the iOS version.

It's the secret to success - that's pretty much what the Doodle Jump guys did. Does anyone remember the level in Mario where you have to keep jumping up the hills but the screen follows you up and if you fall down, it kills you? Once you add in the flower power weapon, bouncing enemies etc, you can see that Doodle Jump is essentially one level from Mario with worse graphics than they had in the early 90s.
