PS2, GameCube or XBox
People,
I could do with some advice. I´m going to buy a game console. The question is...which one.
The most important thing for me is smooth graphics. Secondly, FIFA 2002 and onwards should be available for it. I kind of like racing as well so it needs to have at least one decent racing game. Preferably Formula 1. I don´t care too much about shoot em up games so that´s not an issue. Other than that, I have a DVD ROM on my PB G4 so DVD playback is not important either.
Can anyone offer me some advice?

Then again, you can't get some really good games for the PS2 like my personal favorite, Super Monkey Ball. It may look kiddie but it is very fun and very addictive. Especially in multiplayer mode. Metroid, Mario, Mario cart and  Super Monkey Ball 2  are coming out "soon" so you should keep that in mind too. Many sports and racers come out for all platforms, but Mario, Zelda, Sonic ( so far ), Star Fox, Monkey Ball and many others are nintendo exclusives.
Xbox right now is good for Halo. They have some good games coming out, as well as the $2 billion Xbox Live online system. Unfortunately, the lack of games hurts the system.
PS2 has a lot of 'great' games as well, but the graphics on the system aren't as nice as the GCN or Xbox.
The GameCube has all of the Nintendo games, with a lot of third party support as well. E3 is this week, and I reccomend looking at all of the choices of the consoles AFTER this week.

I heard they are going to make you pay about $20 a month to use it. The gamecube one is supposed to be setup by the game companies so they can charge money if they want or not. Tune to E3 today and tomorrow to find out all the details.
PS2 was just dropped to $199 and GameCube to $150.
If you bought the PS2 one month ago it would have cost you $299. With the price cuts you can get 2 systems for what one would have cost (plus 50 bucks) one month ago.
The Xbox Live system launches with a game- Revolt. Buy Revolt for $50, and get one free year of Xbox Live and the Xbox voice communicator headset.
Sega is charging for use of their PSO servers for that particular game on the GCN. No one can say for sure what's going to happen with them online. But one thing's for sure- the GameCube is worth buying for Metroid Prime alone. That game looks awesome!

Three great reasons to buy a GameCube

One thing the xbox has going for it is progressive scan output option. Though I'm not sure if this is available yet or not.

Gamecube has this too.
Out of curiosity, why does one want to run linux on a PS2?

cause its...cool...?
I would buy the PS2 if you had to pick one. . . why?
- Gran Turismo 3
- Grand Theft Auto 3
- EA sports games
- Metal Gear
Those are the only games i have much interest in. I used to like Final Fantasy games, but I don't have the time for them anymore. I've been told that FF's are going to be coming for GameCube, not sure if they will be coming for Sony too, but I doubt they'll be coming for Xbox. The only merit of Xbox is the fact that MS owns Bungie.
Other concerns: The PS2 controller is way better than the other two.

WHAT!?!? How can you mention Solid Metal Gear without mentioned part 2??!! Part 2 rocks, it's so awsome. not to mention-
Max Payne
Gand Theft Auto
Tomb Raider(s)
SpiderMan
and many many more.
For the racing game- the PS2 comes with optical digital audio out. So if you have surround sound, the racing games rock, also, you can get a converter for the PS2 that lets you hook up component cables to a HDTV and the picture rocks even more.
PS2 all the way. X-Box sucks, breaks, is by M$, has no games, is over-rated, is M$, has no games, is over-rated, did I forget anything?
The Game cube is pretty nice from what I hear, but you can't beat the game library of the PS2 not to mention backwards compatability to PS one.

Just for sh*ts and giggles. In other words for fun.
I also enjoy the XBox racing games, though there's no F1 that I know of. Project Gotham and Rallisport are quite fun though.
If you do end up with an XBox, at least rent Halo and play some multiplayer with it even though you don't like shooters. It's an incredible game.

I don't really like Project Gotham. It's good, but GT3 is much better. I do applaud the company for putting in the Rx-8, but GT3 has the 8, 7's, mod 7's, and even the illustrious 787B. enough to keep a rotorite occupied for a while.
When I said metal gear I was refering to the whole series.
I have managed to "narrow it down" to PS2 and the GameCube.
I agree that the controller of the PS2 is the best one, well for me it is anyway.
So on a fairly cheap telly, which has the best graphics output?
