Depends on how extensive your editing needs are. iPhoto can do basic cropping, straightening, contrast and color adjustments, red eye elimination, etc.
For much more than that I agree that Aperture is a possibility (especially now that it's relatively cheap in the App Store). Adobe Photoshop Elements (which must not be confused with Photoshop per se, an entirely different and vastly less capable program) is on the App Store as well; I'd probably look at the half as much Pixelmator or Acorn before I troubled myself with Adobe's famously Mac hostile software.
And, of course, if you really need to do a great deal of sophisticated tweaking Photoshop remains (regrettably) pretty much the only game in town. But if you actually need Photoshop you probably already know that.
Aperture doesn't look like it has much more than iphoto, am I very wrong? What about Photoshop Lightroom?
Aperture is quite a bit more sophisticated than iPhoto, although some of that has to do with file handling and workflow. It's really designed as a processing/archiving/database program, as is Lightroom.
For someone who is going to be taking a great many photos and needs to be able to sort them, choose the best images, edit and archive them them as quickly as possible Aperture or Lightroom are good choices. If the emphasis is on photo manipulation over workflow Photoshop or Pixelmator make more sense (with Photoshop offering a great more many tools).
If you just need to import photos with metadata and do some basic correction iPhoto is fine.
I just bought foto fx from the app store. It's pretty sweet for only $5. There's a ton of different filters you can add to your pics. Vintage filters are my favorite. I also got 5% cash back on my purchase, which isn't much for $5 but could help if I get something more expensive.
