    This SOUNDS pretty credible.

However, what it really means is that "iPad 3 will not come out with a Retina display..." this year, or we will get an "iPad 3 without HUGE increases in resolution" this year.

I figure, If Apple cannot get the Retina Display on an iPad OR the A4/A5 processor improvement by Next Spring -- then we will have an iPad 3 late this year, only it will feature MARGINAL improvements and probably DOUBLE the RAM for the same price.

    ... What is MOST likely?

A delay until early Spring, as Apple has been hesitant to launch with "lame" improvements. However, Lion could prove me wrong on that opinion.

I wonder if Samsung could have produced this display if they weren't already bitterly suing each other?

Well, I'm not going to bite, but maybe just have a nibble.

First off, we seem to be using without question the word "rumor." I'd characterize most of these stories differently. John Gruber's opening salvo, which I believe was the first thing published about this, did not pretend to be anything other than speculation. Informed speculation, to be sure, by a man with a record of being right, but still no more than an educated guess as to why Apple MIGHT release a new iPad this year.

This was followed quickly by MG Siegler's piece citing two (IIRC) unnamed sources, who had told him as a matter of fact that Apple was indeed planning such a thing. And later by a whole slew of stories mostly drawn from sources in the Asian supply chain, reported in places like Digitimes. Didn't even the WSJ get in on this at some point?

Now it seems to me that these stories are more than rumors, since they do give some indication as to the source of the information, in the manner of conventional journalism (where unnamed sources are an established staple of the profession, and you have to rely on reporters and editors to vet them as thoroughly as possible). So these stories can be termed news reports -- and then we are free to question and rebut them as we see fit, but just saying "bullshit" seems kind of a cop-out.

Okay, so we've got this history of reports, some more credible than others, pointing to a new iPad in the works for this year. If anything, this latest story in Digitimes bolsters the credibility of all the earlier reports in that it reaffirms that such a device has been moving through the early stages of development, only to hit a snag with the high-res display. Digitimes even names the companies where the snag has occurred. As always, you have to trust the editors and writers as to their sources and vetting. But this is their beat: Digitimes tracks the Asian tech supply business like the local paper tracks the fortunes of the high school football team. They can't just make shit up or publish everything they hear, because their readership would abandon them. Their track record is mixed presumably because they're tracking an elusive and devious quarry.

So yes, i think it's credible that Apple was pushing for some kind of pre-holiday surprise. This latest news seems to reinforce that in a backhanded way. Personally I'm relieved it's probably not going to happen. My family might revolt if I buy two iPads in one year, while they're still poking along with the iPad 1

Here's how this probably works. An editor turns to a journalist and tells him, "Get me something on the iPad. This thing is hot and if we can put iPad in the headline, interest will be high." The journalist is stuck. It's May, it's June, it's July and far too soon for much real news on the iPad because work on iPad 3 hasn't commenced yet at the supply-chain level. So, really, that journalist hasn't got a thing. Yet his editor wants an iPad story because that's what consumers of that media source's material want. So out of desperation, the journalist conjures up an iPad 3 coming soon with some sort of major leap in display technology because upgrades in internal components isn't sexy any more. Faster processors, more memory, lighter . . . Yawn. Been there, done that. A retina display, now that's something in a 9.7" tablet. Earlier it was repeated claims that OLED was coming but that one lost steam and so the switch was made to talk of a Retina iPad.

It's not that the journalist in question is an evil, even dishonest jerk who doesn't have the scruples to do an honest job. It's that he or she is under intense pressure to deliver something that isn't there and when your sources are unspecified, what's the harm of making something up? No one could ever find out and so it becomes the expeditious thing to do.

Finally it's August and you figure it's time to make up some explanation for why the iPad 3 isn't going to happen after all in the time you claimed earlier. This is to save face and even your editor doesn't want to end up thoroughly embarrassed next month when the iPad 3 isn't introduced.

    And so it goes.

So now that the rumor is that we *won't* have an iPad3 this year, does that mean it's that much more likely?

I promise you I will eat these electrons if Apple releases a new HW config of the iPad in 2011.

There were also "good reasons" to get the next iPhone out by now. But not doing so (likely for other "good reasons" in Apple's opinion) doesn't exactly seem to have killed Apple.

Also, not all new OS releases are "more demanding" - or at least not all or most aspects of them have to be. In some cases dropping legacy code, tightening up algorithms, advances in language and such (yes, I don't speak "programmer" well, sorry) can lead to better performance than the predecessor. Of course what often happens is the lathering on of more layers of gingerbread - and the addition of new functions which are generally more resource intensive.

Which is why my latest computer generally is as lag-ful as my PS/2 running Win 3.1 was. But if I'm not mistaken, for one counter-example, most of the key benchmarks for Win 7 are better on the same hardware than Vista's.

PS: I think you might be onto something about Apple eventually forking the A family of processors. This could be useful for a number of reasons going forward, but I'm not dissuaded from my other points by your, yes, reasonable counter-arguments. e.g., I still say we'll see more GB of flash storage only when Apple can put it out at a similar price for the same margins and not before. and the set of solutions being introduced this year for various types of backing up - where, e.g., your music list, but not your actual music files will be available remotely, plus iCloud, will meet most folk's usage patterns without gobs of storage even tho' many of we on these forums will pine for it.

However, I'm looking seriously at a TB-equipped 13" MBA - and using that port as a docking station into the new Apple big-boy monitor to keep my terabytes of home storage, optical drives and other periphs one plug-in away from when I need 'em and coping with a mere 128 + Apple's cloud services when I'm on the road - and being able to get a performance upgrade every year or two by replacing the Air - which should - as things stand now - always keep me within about a gen or so of the performance of the latest MBP, which I couldn't afford to replace as often.

    Paradigms do evolve.

it was merely a rumor that a 2011 ipad 2 pro/2 HD/3 was ever going to happen. And now we have a rumor that says that it was, but Apple cancelled it due to problems.

it is equally likely that the sources for these rumors released this new info to cover up that they were blowing it out their butts the whole time.

Sort of like when US Weekly claims two folks are a couple while they are working on something together and then they break up just as things are wrapping up. Were they a couple or was US lying for cover stories the whole time

    Exactly.

One could say the same thing about the iphone 5. Sure on the HW side it will likely be a slightly faster version of the same processor, a couple more megapixels on the camera and perhaps a slightly better Oleo coating. Basically a 4.25 if you will. But the software will raise that up to a serious upgrade, especially for the target audience which isn't the iphone 4 owners but the 3gs owners (95%of folks buy every two years when they can get a full contract discount not every year)

Any hardware update to any iOS device is a new device. None of this x.5 nonsense.

I agree. Steve promised something new every 6 months. The next big thing ......the iphone 5 in about 30 days.

The iPad 3 announced early 2012.

You may have a point. However, a retina iPhone app on iPad is nowhere near an iPad app. I've already got this iPhone app, why should it look crap when I run it on my iPad...?

At this stage in the game there is strong momentum for quality iPad apps. Enabling retina resolution for iPhone apps on iPad is IMHO not a big deal and will only enhance sales of the whole hardware and software ecosystem.

HaHa! I have to laugh at these absurd rumors of an iPad3 coming out when Apple can barely make enough iPad2's to satisfy demand.

It made no sense two months ago when we argued this, and doesn't make any more sense to me now.

The iPhone5 on October 7 rumor - now that sounds likely.

I've decided I want this, but there's no way to jailbreak the latest iOS version yet. By the time they get to it, iOS 5 will be out... this sucks.
