"this could mean it's almost game over for Samsung in Europe."

Forget the iPhone 4 antenna, this is the genuine "death grip."

It's unfortunate that Community Design is used as a weapon against legitimate competitors. I can't imagine that this is the outcome that the lawmaker's envisioned.

Apple knows how to work the system. Use line drawings with as little detail as possible (no photos. Too much detail there). File hundreds of them, with variations on each. Cover any possible design that an iPad/iPod/iPhone competitor might use. Then sit back and wait to see if any worthy devices arrive in the market.

This article covers some of the issues associated with the Community Design process, and some examples of other Apple filings.

Good. Time for a shakeup. See who's left standing.

I don't buy that argument at all. Apple doesn't submit all of those drawings so they can use them later for patent infringement suits. They do it so it's difficult to pinpoint exactly which design direction they're going. Has Apple ever cried over someone infringing upon one of the "hundred" drawings submitted for a design they DIDN'T use?

    I don't think so.

Apple has become the most envied....and copied....companies in the CE world.

The comments about Samsung make me laugh. They have the largest number of Mobile Communications related Patents and a whole raft in other categories. Do you think a US$140Bn business gets to where it is without any form of research and development?

I'm an Apple fan, use their products and love their ecosystem. However some of the comments about China and Samsung are borderline racist.

C'mon, the Galaxy S II is nothing like an iPhone. It is build from different materials, it is a different shape (curved back), the home button is a different shape and it has two other touch buttons on the front, it has a vastly bigger display, and hardware-wise it's a generation ahead of the iPhone 4 because of Apple's release cycle.

And form-factor-wise the shape is not different from older mobile devices like PDAs, so you can't just say "it's cos it is rectangular with curved corners with a screen on the front".

In 2000/2001 I used a Geode/QNX based tablet that looked just like a thicker plastic iPad. Flat front, screen, bezel, curved corners, flat back with curves at the edges. Dock connector to the charging cradle. I think there were some extra buttons, and of course it was 2000/1 design, not 2010 design but it wasn't a major difference.

Some of those other tablets look borderline stupid however.

There is a reason as to why computers where invented only after the use electricity was discovered.

To be able to create something, you actually need the means to do so.

Quite confident that Apple would have failed to create the iPad in 2000, simply because the technology wasn't advanced enough :>

There are clear similarities IMO. Samsung has obviously gone out of its way to copy Apple's designs in phones, tablets and laptops. The Bada UI takes the cake:

Slightly transforming the iconic parts of a competitor's design doesn't make it ok. While the phone might get away with having enough differences, it makes sense for Apple to lump all the devices together because it shows a trend.

Again. Once was a mistake. Twice probably isn't.

Size aside, Samsung is clearly copying the iPhone's look.
