Walter Moskowitz generally knows quite a bit about he's writing about. I suspect something was bungled somewhere between what he originally wrote and what we see here.
Maybe Walter Moskowitz knows what he is writing about, but Mark Moskowitz doesn't. And Mark is the JP Morgan analyst in question here.
Perhaps you're thinking of Walter Mossberg of WSJ.
So, Apple is going to be selling 3 different iPhone models at once? Sweet!
Just like they had a product matrix for the iPod, they need one for the iPhones. A pay-as-you-go phone, a low-end contract phone, and a 4" pro model.
You do realize that this will make lineups in front of Apple Stores longer and slower? Remember what it was like - which model do you want - 16 or 32 GB? How many units do you want to buy - one or two? Those two questions alone kept Apple staff spinning. Now they are going to have to ask - which model, what color, how much memory, how many units, ....

Remember that JoyOfTech comic about Vista? All the different versions in the store and then the guy pulls out the single version of OS X?
That's what the iPhone will become if these morons (read: the people whining for new features/carriers/whatever) get their way.
"I want an iPhone."
Okay, sir, black or white?"
"Black".
"16, 32, or 64GB?"
"Uh, 32, I guess."
"iPhone 4, iPhone 4S (Note: YOU MORONS), or iPhone 5?"
The iPod touch will become Apple's pre-paid phone.

Apple has been very smart about inserting wedges into new markets that change consumer perceptions and expectations. All it takes is the adding the option of a 3G transceiver to an iPodTouch, just like on the iPad to turn the consumers a few more degrees away from dependence on carrier voice plans.
Many people, mostly youngsters, don't rely on voice nearly as much these days, and a device/plan like this would suit them perfectly. Plus, it would play well in the pre-paid space. Whether it's this update or the next, I see this happening.

"Pick one, sir; the line's long."

imo people buying iphones are going to know what they want more than that... not saying there aint going to be a few zombies out there, but it should not be the majority.

Any iPhone 4s has to be at least as good as the current 4, otherwise the current 4 will become rare and it's value will rise.
But wasn't the 3GS a 16 or 32GB phone until the iPhone 4 was released, and then the 3GS became an 8GB phone? I like the iPhone 4 and can imagine I might prefer it to the next iPhone, but not if the only iPhone 4 is an 8GB one.

Apple loves lines, they generate great press
Me, I don't do lines... I'll wait the extra week or two (if I have to) by ordering online.

Yeah, that makes sense. Keep the 3GS and iPhone 4 at the 8GB level, to make it less attractive for people who could afford the 4s.

I don't think the Apple Stores will mind.
The problem will be with Apple's distributors (Best Buy, WalMart, Radio Shack, Verizon, AT&T, the old Authorized Resellers, etc.).
Apple already has 18 iPads. Will everyone want to stock that many iPhones? And I won't mention trying to maintain a staff with any knowledge, esp. at Radio Shack.
Um, right. I forgot the colors and the ones that work with different carriers worldwide. There are 100 models of iPad and iPhone. It's a wonder they sell any.

If Apple can make sufficient quantities of an iPhone 4, an iPhone 4s, AND an iPhone 5 all at the same time, this would be huge!
Apple's market cap is >$380B as of today. By far, the most valuable company in the US (perhaps the world).
Wow.
More confusion.
The iPod touch will become Apple's pre-paid phone.

You put too much faith in people.

You over-estimate your intellect. People will go into a shop and buy what is within their price range, as they do with everything else.
At the moment Apple is leaving money on the table by not supplying people with cheaper phones.

Oh ffs. There are 2 iPad models. One with 3G, one without. You decide which one, then you choose the price within you budget.
And one black. And one white. And one that works with Verizon. And one that works with AT&T. And one with 16GB and 32GB and 64GB.
These are all different hardware.
Are you kidding me, man?

Yep... and there were 8 different colors of the last iPod Nano... in both 8GB and 16GB.
It's a wonder people didn't get so confused... and buy a Sandisk Sansa player instead...
J.P. Morgan revealed on Monday that its proprietary research suggests Apple will release two new iPhone models this fall
