Time magazine recognizing multi-billionaire Steve Jobs over the poor Tunisian fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi (whose self-immolation sparked the Arab Spring which in turn helped to ignite the Occupy Movement) would NOT be news IMHO.
Acknowledging the catalyst that was one man who would otherwise be invisible to the world at large, whose symbolic suicide called people to action all over the world, demanding accountability and change from their leaders and governments; now THAT would be news (unless perhaps if Steve Jobs had bit a dog)!
And yes, this WAS sent from my iPhone because my Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and work-issued MacBook were not where I read this article from!
My thought is that Time must have its head pretty far up its a$$ to never have given it to him before. The dude took a company on the edge of bankruptcy and turned it into the most valuable company in the world, and somehow in not a single one of the years that he was doing that (years in which the iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad were introduced) did he ever get this silly award.
They might as well just give it to the CEO of Adobe.
Out of Kindness they may give it too him, now that he is gone. He may not have accepted it towards the end of his life. I honestly think he would have told Time magazine to give it to someone else. Why not ask steve wife. I bet she would say no.
I mean, this is America where people couldn't handle John Lennon saying the Beatles were bigger than Jesus and he thought that was a bad thing. I think it's just plain dumb to say considering all the wars that have been fought for religion, when the strongest war you have in smartphones is iOS vs Android heh.
It's been a bloodbath so far. Hundreds of Fandroid egos were bruised by the discontinuation of their beloved mobile Flash.
Jobs worked hard for it and craved it when he was alive. The honor was denied him several years in a row and given to some less deserving of the award. What difference will the award make now for him?
Too many questionable and unethical news surrounding Steve and Apple. I hope he doesn't get it.
We'll agree to this if you refrain from using all graphical user interfaces, and multi-touch screens and indeed all Apple equipment, services, or anything inspired by Apple. Stick with MS-DOS and pre-2007 smart phones, for the rest of your life. You live in that world, we'll live in ours.

You could ask the same question of a eulogy: of what use is it for a dead person to have flowers and nice words thrown at their corpse?
Of what use is it for George Washington that we put his face on the U.S. dollar bill or Mount Rushmore? What difference will the honor make now for him?
Maybe the purpose of posthumous awards isn't for the dead.
Maybe it's for the living, the society they belonged to.

The "award" is supposed to be for what he accomplished in 2011. Let's see what it was....
January he goes on medical leave of absence.
August he resigns.
October he passes away.
Looks like nothing.
Everything you listed above, Apple was "inspired" from someone else.
Go ahead and continue to live in your world, it gives Leno, Letterman, SNL... good material!

(deleted the other crap)!
You have no idea what you're talking about. To quote Time Magazine, "has done the most to influence the events of the year." That has nothing to do with some direct or purposeful technical or business accomplishment you've imagined it to be. Even Time's statement is somewhat bogus. They will choose the person that will help sell the most magazines.

LOL when fandroids are backed into a corner... watch out! They'll pull out the But-Apple-didn't-invent-anything-in-a-vacuum-therefore-Apple-deserves-no-credit card.

Even if they did someone would foolishly point out Apple didn't invent the vacuum either.
PS: That's what we call them in the US. I know you Brits like to refer to them by the brand name Hoover.

Steve Jobs is no longer around to refuse it. How does anybody know if he would have even accepted it?
Who's to say that Time isn't just trying to make money off of his name and face to sell more copies?
They might as well just give it to the CEO of Adobe.

Well then give him some kind of lifetime achievement recognition, because 'Person of the Year' just doesn't seem appropriate in this case.
Steve shall be named 'Person of the 21st Century'. Sorry everyone: voting is now closed. Come back in 89 years.

Don't forget the World Wide Web.
Of what use is it for him dead?

I don't see why he should win it. He did a lot for computers and the modern world, but nothing this particular year.
They will pick the person that will help them sell the most magazines.

Whoa. I didn't want to be cruel and cut the guy off from his only source of porn and friendship.

Incorrect. The selections are based on what the magazine describes as who they believed had a stronger influence on history.

... and if selected could could become the first person to be posthumously awarded the distinction.
(a) could could? fer cryin' out loud, spell/syntax/grammar checkers are free.
(b) could become the first person to be posthumously awarded
so even if steve is selected, there's someone else who might be the first person to be posthumously awarded the distinction?
I think it's just plain dumb to say considering all the wars that have been fought for religion.
Let's pull a "Myth Busters" on this one:
Civil War: Not religion
World War I: Not religion
World War II: Not religion
The Cold War: Not religion
Korean War: Not religion
Vietnam War: Not religion
Iraq Iran War: Oil, not religion
Kuwait Iraq War: Oil, not religion
Iraq War: Oil, not WMD, not religion
Afghanistan War: Natural Resources, not Bin Laden, not religion
I know I missed a few more in there like Grenada and Panama.
This myth is BUSTED.
