Of concern is that while Apple did have the novelty application for sale in the App Store, Apple did not develop the application. Why is there no mention of neither Casey nor Zimmer approaching the developer? Is is because it's easier to 'target' Apple or there's not enough 'press' to 'go after' the developer?
And as to Zimmer jumping on the "Told ya so" bandwagon, sounds a lot like posturing and justifying the coalition's existance. Makes you wonder why apparently no state BMV/DMV expressed concerns.
Exactly. It is a sad day for AppStore. Now it is clear that censorship (although the original Apple's intentions might be innocent) is never a good thing. I don't want to defend the app - it is a pretty much dumb one. But why that senator is not trying to shut down Photoshop or any similar software ? It is as easy to create such false ID in Photoshop.
The worst thing is that many US citizens think that they still live in the free country. Dark days are ahead, when with all that debt people who should care about the running the state are spending their time browsing the AppStore.
I bet if there was a bomb making app on the appstore, then people here would whine about that too if it were pulled.
And just for the record, I also agreed with Apple when they pulled a DUI checkpoint app, which helped drunk scumbags find out where police checkpoints are. I want drunk scumbags to be caught, or if they crash, then hopefully they are the only ones to die.
Fortunately you're not running the country. And based on the number of posts you've generated since January, you need to get a life!

What is that supposed to mean?
There are people here who post less than I do and there are people here who post a lot more than I do. You're on the internet and you're judging somebody for being on the internet?
this measure is not about safety or security folks. safety and security are the smoke screen. it is all about having us comply and obey. it would be wise to vote Senator Bob Casey (D-Penn out of office while we still have the option. we pay taxes for zimmer to get rich off of imposing a police state.

You'd be surprised. There are plenty of incompetent fools that work in security related jobs. Have you ever run into some of the baboons that work for the TSA at airports?
Nope, read about them being at Apple, Anthony Colon, Apple's Senior Investigator. You know, the one that went in to someone's house without properly identifying himself and now Apple is going to be sued.
Exactly. It is a sad day for AppStore. Now it is clear that censorship (although the original Apple's intentions might be innocent) is never a good thing.
More like just another normal day. Apple has repeatedly, though inconsistently, acted like a dick towards app developers from day one. Devs take it because there's enough money to make. I don't really understand what Apple is gaining by it though - why not at least make the walled garden's rules explicit and submission process transparent, like Microsoft is promising to do with their own store? They are certainly driving away some developers. I myself would be extremely reluctant to start developing on iOS and Apple's behavior, not the closed system in general, is the biggest reason for that.
Even that, of course, doesn't solve the problem of the corporation being placed in a position of moral arbiter. Which is pretty much what pulling this particular app is about.
So if I haven't been drinking I have to be punished by waiting in a line of cars for police officers to invade my privacy and breathalyze me?
Driving fatalities are at a record low since they were first measured. No checkpoints are going to stop a significant amount of drunk drivers from using the roads, only education and social pressuring will accomplish that feat (which it is), NOT officers stopping and questioning law abiding citizens.
From the article:
Statistics show that 80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes resulted from some kind of distraction experienced when drivers were either eating or drinking, reading, listening to music, or talking texting on their cell phones.
Do you see drunk driving mentioned anywhere in there?
The fact is that a DUI checkpoint app wouldn't be taken down from the Android market (and even if it was, Android allows you to install any software package from any source if you change that option) because Google doesn't assert authoritarian control over what apps you develop and install on your phone.
Are you the kind of person who agrees with random immigration checkpoints questioning US citizens as well?
I also don't think anyone would whine about a bomb-making app being pulled from the app-store. Why are you making that leap? The fake drivers license app was obviously for fun, something your kids could play around with (remember, they wish they could have an ID like mommy and daddy).
EDIT: Actually yes, drunk driving is mentioned in the article:
Studies have found that drivers who use their cell phones for talking or texting have much slower response times than those who do not. They also have slower reaction times than people with blood alcohol levels of 0.08.
110% agreed. Very well said.
I wonder if the people so riled about DD.. are the same ones talking or texting on the cellphones while driving. Look around, pretty much everyone is doing it. So are we going to have checkpoints to see if people have sent a text or made a phone call while they were driving?
It's not like the app was actually making convincing licenses, and it's not like someone could easily make an even more convincing fake with google image search and ms paint.
Here we go. Wanna get serious about people driving "under the influence" of something.. then the cellphones definitely need to go to. While we're at it.. lets make checkpoints to harrass everyone and see if they've been on their phone while driving:
Washington (CNN) -- Federal accident investigators Tuesday called for a nationwide ban on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.
Study: Half of young people text, drive The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the National Transportation Safety Board, which in the past 10 years has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable electronic devices. It has recommended such bans for novice drivers, school bus drivers and commercial truckers.
The new recommendation, if adopted by states, would outlaw non-emergency phone calls and texting by operators of every vehicle on the road.
It would not apply to hand-free devices or to passengers.

yeah and you think corporations and the government should baby sit us. That alone is enough to judge you as someone who isn't very intelligent. Would you not be alive today if it weren't for seat belt and helmet laws or something?
The licenses were obvious fakes. Anyone could make an even more convincing fake with google image search and ms paint.
Oh but yeah, pull it, because everyone is stupid, and we should protect ourselves from... ourselves...

This is why I hope Siri is something Apple starts to sell to other phone companies. It's ability to send a decently converted text by voice could save MANY lives.

What if 18 year olds flew to Burkina Faso and legally had sex with 13 year old girls?
Oh Crap! But she had ID. How was I to know it was fake!

All this at the request of a congressman. Ugh.
