Planning on buying the new 15.4" MacBook Pro and I've been told by Apple stores that they have "no idea" when it will be out. Does anyone have an approximate date that they will be in the stores and on sale?

Because they literally do not know. They don't even know it exists, and they won't until Monday morning when the shipments come in, if THAT.

Depending on the location of the store, anywhere from that Monday to that Friday.

While that seems likely enough... it's working on the assumption that there will be new models introduced. That's not even a guarantee, as Apple says NOTHING about these things prior to release.
It's likely enough, given their history, but the few people who would actually know have had to sign non-disclosure agreements that include penalties if they fail to keep the secret.
As for DrRichard... if you don't NEED it today, it would certainly make sense to wait until next week as Apple is holding a big Developer Conference then and it would be a likely place to announce new hardware if its going to happen this summer.
