That so called heat issue is a bunch of ignorant BS in the same manner as discussions surrounding lens flare in iPone 5. Basically a bunch of ignorant people that don't understand the technology trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Here is the reality, Ivy Bridge runs with far less dissipated power allowing Intel to save a few bucks on a fancy heat spreader interface. The fact that they can get away with a less efficient thermal interface means that the chip itself isn't producing as much heat. Further the fact that this discussion arises out of the over locking sub culture should further cause you to question the whole discussion.

Intel rates and sells its chips for specific usages, as such the overclocking community is on their own.

Intel does not guarantee performance beyond the part's rated spec. I don't think anyone has proven that happens at a given part's rated speed.

Hopefully. We can't know. Many signs point to it.

If the iMac were to come out now, is it worth buying at this point given that Ivy Bridge is already half a year old and Haswell is expected out in Q2 of 2013?

Why would Apple ship a "new" computer with rapidly aging parts that will be outdated in 6 months?

Apple is gradually doing away with built-in optical drives, so that's an easy assumption if Apple is doing a redesign.

That might be why Apple is stalling on an update.

However, the supply at launch can be constrained. It might take a few months to be able to supply quantities that Apple uses. Keep in mind that Apple changes an entire product line at once, so all iMacs would be switched over to a new chip.

It wouldn't make sense for apple to not release an iMac without a 2x pixel ratio of their current OS if they have already designed it for one of their macbooks, the macbook pro with retina display. Besides, a 21 inch retina display would be gorgeous on an iMac and of course they would put a 3000 dollar price tag on it and nobody would buy it.

So here's my final thoughts on the upcoming iMac. It will have a better front facing camera, it will be as thin an an iPad, removing the cd bay drive and it will come in white and black versions. The sides frames will be made of metal much like in the iPhone's 3GS or the iPods 4th gen. And the speakers will be built on the left and right edges of the iMacs screen for better sound clarity. They will not take away function from the iMac, or increase the size of the screens sides. It'll come with a haswell processor and D4 Ram possibly. It'll come with wifi n and sd storage soldered onto the board.

They did it with the iPad.

…of course they would put a 3000 dollar price tag on it and nobody would buy it.

Why? The rMBP isn't exorbitantly priced.

…it will be as thin an an iPad…

Well, there goes all power and point, dunnit?

…it will come in white and black versions.

    How?

And the speakers will be built on the left and right edges of the iMacs screen for better sound clarity.

But worse directionalizing, though, right? That's not the right word…

They will not take away function from the iMac…

… Making a desktop computer as thin as an iPad takes away all meaningful function.

It'll come with a Haswell processor and D4 Ram possibly.

It'd be nice if Apple got Haswell early, but they don't care about their computers anymore, so it's kind of hard to wish for that to ever happen again.

You mean 802.11ac? I doubt it would have SSD storage natively, though having just a 16GB chip for the OS and leaving the applications and everything else to the HDD would be great.

External DVD players are $25 or LESS. Buying an old computer because of that is ludicrous.

    Set it on the foot.

Yes. There's nothing at all wrong with the current one, but the new one's close enough that you may as well wait if you want the newest.

Nope, nothing is "supposed" to happen. Apple does stuff when they want to, and unless it's available for purchase right then, they don't really announce early. Which is why we're still so far in the dark.

Isn't DDR4 RAM standard with Haswell? Talking about Haswell would by definition mean talking about DDR4.

Not in the slightest. I run it with 4GB on my Penryn pre-unibody MacBook Pro, and it's just fine.

Heck, I still only have 6GB in my Mac Pro and it runs even better there. Frig, I need more RAM… But not for Mountain Lion.
