Apple should go Thermonuclear with China

Well, you laugh, but if the hack really did originate with a unit of the Chinese PLA, shouldn't we treat this as a hostile incursion of sovereign territory by a foreign army?

I say that we should retaliate big time. And then we can just play dumb and deny any involvement afterwards. When I say we, I mean the US of course.

This better be a damn sarcastic joke. If it's not...

You're exactly the kind of insane that has kept the USA in perpetual war for ages. Once the USA has made it a rule to respond to software attacks (which cause no damage to anything or anyone) with violence, physical destruction and death, will you be satisfied or will you be demanding to see such violence against 12-year-old script kiddies in the USA too? Do we really need to have buildings demolished, city infrastructure damaged, and non-combatants murdered in order to make you brats feel like you live in the most powerful nation on the planet? Why is it that violence appeals to you so much?

I really hope those comments about warfare against software hacks were just bad jokes. Sadly, there are plenty enough such comments made totally sincerely on the anonymous-coward playground of the Internet.

Just Blacklist all of their IP Addresses and be done with it....:smokey:

Not that simple. A hacker will often connect through one or more additional systems to hide their trail.

I'm talking about governments hacking into all sorts of businesses and companies on a wide scale level, stealing whatever info that they can. No, I do not believe that the US military hacks into hundreds of businesses across the world like a bunch of thieves to steal data. I don't believe that US military specialists are sitting around at the moment trying to hack into Apple or Facebook or any other company.

Now, if we're talking about a virus being placed on something like an Iranian nuke reactor system, that I can definitely believe that the US government would do, and I also think that they should.

The NSA hacked/spied on Airbus negotiations with a large potential customer and passed the information on to Boeing and McDonal Douglas to help them win the enormous contract.

Yes. Except we won't. And they'll just do it again.

The most reasonable recourse to this would be some form of economic sanction, except that won't happen either.

I mean, North Korea just did their third nuke and we didn't immediately cut off all exports to that country. China will get a free pass on this.

Lighten up Francis. No one is going to physical war over this. They call it cyber warfare for a reason. Every country that is capable is already in the game. They really want to know what the new Mac Pros are going to look like.

But who knows what will happen in the future, in maybe a decade or two from now?

Any communist government is a criminal enterprise, as far as I'm concerned, and eventually down the road, they might be looking for a real fight.
    Your xenophobic chest-thumping is comical.
The US does not partipate in cyber warfare?
Really? Do you read the news? I don't count Fox as news.
Hear about the Iranian nuclear facilities being targeted, these were US and Israeli created viruses.
But hey, it's Iran, so it's okay.
To you the US is good and EVERY other country is evil, what a warped view.

You do realize that the US using nukes will most likely start WW III, don't you? I know you prefer all people in Palestine to be killed (one of your old posts on a different thread), so now you hate everyone, including your fellow Americans? I don't get your warped silly thinking.

If you feel they couldn't have then yours is just as valid an opinion of course.

EDIT: It completely possible that it was Facebook who notified Apple that they were being hacked and their systems compromised, based on this linked article from Ars.

Ask the Attorney General of California...

California law requires a business or state agency to notify any California resident whose unencrypted personal information, as defined, was acquired, or reasonably believed to have been acquired, by an unauthorized person. (California Civil Code s. 1798.29(a) and California Civ. Code s. 1798.82(a))

That's it's unlikely Apple didn't have any data taken just as the others did? In my opinion yes sir, linked in my previous post. It's being reported that at least 115 companies, most based in the US, have fallen victim with 100's of terabytes taken. These aren't short term attacks according to the report. The New York Times says their cyber-intrusion continued for 4 months before it was discovered. Facebook just became aware of their "Chinese hack" a couple of days ago.

Both the Facebook and Apple intrusions were reported in the past few days.  It's possibly due to a Presidential order last week allowing US intelligence agencies to share what they know about active cyber-intrusions with private companies.

You accuse Apple of lying, yet in your opinion Google can do no wrong. even when they lie.
Why your concern on this supposedly stolen data? I don't see you writing post after post on the stolen data from Android devices. How come? A good guess would be that there are so many that's it's impossible to do so?
    Thanks for your concern.

I am not taking sides...BUT the machines that were affected were DEV (development) machines. Dev machines and production machines are always segmented from eachother. This way if a dev code goes wrong or has some unexpected result it will not affect production machines. So any information gathered from these machines would not have Apple users accounts information in them. BUT they might have good dev insights.....but Apple would not be required to report that.

Could be. How does it compare to sending drones into another country in the name of killing terrorists but also taking out civilians from time to time?

What are you going to do about it, other than misrepresent what (supposedly all) Americans think, as if the entire country was united under one stereotype (of chest-thumping xenophobes)?

You mean how do I feel about drone strikes not being 100% perfectly surgical? I don't get how it relates to the rest of this thread.

This is right out of Tom Clancy's latest novel. Time to get Jack Ryan Jr., John Clark sand the Campus to save the day. Read "Threat Vector", it has the Chinese "cyber attacking" the US from a large office building in China!!!

Consider that the horror of PO might shock some posters into never bringing up politics again....

Not what I said at all, as you already knew since you've read the thread.

Yeah, there's not a whole lot keeping this thread on topic. The naysayers are NOT defending nor condoning what the Chinese hackers have allegedly done, just using the opportunity to call Americans hypocrites or whatever. It's the equivalent of arguing, "but Americans hack foreign powers, too! Or America does evil so therefore...Apple deserves to be hacked." Or some such nonsense.
