Highly entertaining ad, but I'm not sure it's a good ad in the sense that it markets their brand well. There are too many references to the everything but what they are trying to sell until the very end. I even thought to myself that the old guy with the white/silver iPhone 5 had a smart looking phone.
I agree. There is a school of thought in advertising that funny ads are a waste of money because people get so wrapped up in the humor that they forget which product is being advertised, especially if it is a relatively new or unknown product.
Advertising formula usually goes something like this:
Catchy headline
Show the product
Create the idea that a person needs the product (with copy to support the headline)
Show people using the product
Offer a further incentive such as a sale or limited time offer
Then tell them where they can buy the product.
Might be boring and conservative but usually more effective than flat out slapstick
It is possible to make a funny effective ad through. One that comes to mind is the Old Spice commercials which are constantly showing the product, showing people using it, throughout the entire ridiculously over the top ad.
Of course that they all still committing a big mistake about stereotyping iOS users as fanatics. While millions buy the iPhone for status, the best costumers are the ones that use it to get work done. EVERYONE that buys a galaxy S only do it because of ads. The phone is mid range at best, be it on build quality, screen or "work-ready" features and the ecosystem is very very low-end.
Is the Lumia different? It just looks like a a different toy, it won't look good to a serious smartphone user that already has an iPhone.
OS aside, I like these Lumia phones. Their industrial design reminds me of the first IPod Mini.
I'm not giving up my iPhone, but for the market that isn't using a Mac or iPad, they don't have to go with an iPhone. Thinking that they do, regardless of the superiority of the Apple ecosystem, is being arrogant or living in denial.
IMO, the next iOS needs to be "must have," not another small evolutionary step. Apple is no longer the only company who knows how to execute decent screen design. It's Apple who is now looking "plain".
The Lumia is a knock-off of the Zune, which was a rip off of the first IPod Mini. I suspect that's why you make the association that you do.
You're not the first person that has made the statement that the Apple UI is "plain" or "boring." It's as if there's some kind of need to change the UI to keep a user guessing. It's like the automotive industry. I've bought the same car over and over since 1990. The newer models have new features that I enjoy, but the manufacturer feels a need to fiddle with the UI in the cockpit, and often not for the better. Buttons move from the dash to the door and back, the turn signal sports more other functions that it's hard to not do more then the one thing I intended... and don't get me started on the windshield wiper control.
Psst... I can get you a great deal on a Windows Phone 7... only used for a few months. Go your own way, don't follow the crowd. Win Phone 7 is the road less traveled at all. If you're really really not wanting to be a follower, pick up a hardly used Palm phone from eBay. Be a BOSS...!
Oh Microsoft! How does it feel to be the Linux of the smartphone world?
Trust me. Ballmer would kill to have loyal phone and tablet customers like Apple enjoys. Microsoft must have been shocked at how fast they lost relevance in the smart phone market (Windows CE), and how few people came back to Windows phones when Nokia came out with them. The big bully on the block didn't realize that people were nice to him, but not because they liked him...

This ad was entertaining but seriously I doubt it will cause Apple or Samsung fans to switch... the best it may do is draw some people that have never owned a smart phone to take a look at the Nokia.
The thing that Nokia and Samsung lack in their advertising is no one is ever shown using the phone to do anything actually useful that normal people would see as super-helpful. That's all that Apple does in their ads.
Samsung or Blackberry are the sorts to do stupid stunts. Jobs said all that could be said when he declared "Microsoft lacks taste."
I wasn't being serious, simply making a reference to the mock funeral Microsoft staff had for the iPhone at its launch ... it would, if Apple staff did do such stupid stunt , be forgivable and payback ... well that was I had hoped my post would be read as meaning ...

Ballmer loves to laugh at the iPhone
I just realized that slogan 'Don't fight. Switch' is a take on Tareyton Cigarettes ad during the 60-70s which read 'I'd Rather Fight than Switch'.
That nod to nostalgia was probably lost on many in the Lumina target demographic.
I admit it was very funny, but it does nothing for the Nokia brand.

Yup. Love it. Windows Phone is still fucked, but this ad was immensely entertaining.

That's right! What's with the stereotyping
I am going to buy a Lumia now...
I am not going to be an iShip.

Windows Phone is the best phone ever...

Interesting analogy. I don't agree that is the place they hold. But still interesting nonetheless.
