Well I bow to your superior knowledge on processing power because I am not sure myself, but aren't a great deal of iOS 7's new features unavailable on older phones for this exact reason?  This has always been true with each release of course, but I've read numerous reports of it being quite marked with iOS 7.

It would seem that the internals of this thing would have to at least be iPhone 5 level (camera filter, AirDrop) for it to make sense but I guess by the time it comes out, that will be "last years" guts.

I strongly think it would at least have the 5's processor. Or it could have an A5X (boosted GPU).

But yeah, that would be "last year's" tech.

An iPhone without a CAMERA? The most popular camera in the world... without a camera? :wow:

There's a limit to the stinginess of the people to whom Apple wants to sell.

Well technically, this would be a NEW category, so anything is possible. Also something to separate it further from the premium iPhone.

But yeah, dumb idea. Maybe it will have a lower-grade camera though.

I meant to run flawlessly. In the past, certain iOS releases have run on older hardware but with limited features.

And yeah, I don't see Apple ever releasing a phone sans retina display. But that presents a hurdle as far as price.

Perhaps they'll forgoe the rear camera a la the new iPod touch.

I honestly think its more likely they'll withold retina before removing the camera for the low cost phone.

As Tallest said the camera on the iPhone and on phones in general is a popular feature. Conversely the iPod touchs rear camera is a barely advertised likely barely used feature.

Apple released a non-retina affordable iPad last year and I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that this new iPhone could share the same screen as the iPad Mini.

It would be cost effective for Apple since nothing else is using the 163PPI screen anymore.

The people who are claiming that Apple would never do something like this or use those colors are in for quite a surprise.image

I don't think Ive designed that box. Link?

I thought Ive's first work as head of industrial design was the iMac.

iOS 7 seems to be designed with retina in mind, which makes what you're saying unlikely. Especially since the iPad mini will likely get a retina version as well.

If Apple is leaving two things behind, it's the 30 pin connector and non-retina displays.

Exactly. Well, minus the iPhone 4 and 4S and iPad 2 and iPad mini that get iOS 7.

But they can completely remove all non-retina UIImage elements and references thereto from the OS (except for the iPad 2/mini's ipsw files), which will slim it down quite a bit. Bet they won't, though, because of the iPad 2/mini.

And those won't be for sale, I'm guessing. Just refurbished.

Could they make it so iOS 7 only downloads non-retina images for certain devices, like the iPad 2 and Mini?

Sure; that's why every device has its own separate IPSW file. But when people crack open iOS 7.0.0 GM, I bet you they'll all still have those images regardless of the device.

Ah, but if iPhone "cheapo" is real, then all of those iPhones will certainly be discontinued this year and with a new iPad mini, there is no reason to keep making the old one.

But they still get the OS! That was the defining point. The support for them will remain in the OS, and I do bet that references to the files for them will show up across all devices' IPSWs.

Take Mavericks, for example. It still has 1024x1024 images of old Macs that can't even run Intel-based OS' on them! 'Course that might just be because it's physically possible to be on the same network as one of them... But not all of them (for which that is possible) are there! Nor is every type of iOS device in there! There's no iPhone 5 or iPod touch 5 image in Mavericks.

I see there are a lot of comments about "Apple would never use colors like that". I think what Apple is doing, and pretty intelligently, is to target color selections that younger generations would like. If you go to any store and take a look at girls jeans... they are available in nearly identical colors. The 80's color palettes are back with a vengeance whether you like it or not. You also see the same, over saturated tones in iOS7. This is Apple's modern look, like it or not.

The good news is, this phone isn't made for you. You're a successful 30, 40 50 something and they have the solution for you. It's called and iPhone 5S, 6, etc. How do you prevent fragmentation while differentiating your brand and pricing? Color and material.

For those who say "why can't they make it like the iPod touch". Simple. It's called "antennas". While the iPhone 5 and 5S will use the metal band and aluminum, the device can be made much less expensive with polycarbonate or plastic. It's simply less expensive and parents around the world will rejoice and buy these like hot cakes. Actually, probably faster than hot cakes. I don't think they sell fast any more.

Almost all iPhones are put in a case anyway, so no one would know you had a "Maize" phone anyway.

It is always hard to pass judgement by photos over the internet, but so far those colors are pretty ugly.  It this rumor is true then I'd want to see them in person for sure.  Having the colors may not be a big deal anyway as in the case of my iPhone case barely any of the phone is shown besides the screen.

Of course, but the original statement was "leaving (non-lightning, non-retina) behind."  Not manufacturing the devices anymore certainly qualifies IMO.  Additionally, because they are (hypothetically/presumably) switching to this new manufacturing model, they won't be selling last year's or the year before's products anymore either.  It would be (hypothetically/presumably), the iPhone, and the "cheap" variant each year instead.

Also, the iPad mini is already lightning equipped as is the iPad 4.  The iPad 4 and the iPad 3 are both already retina.  The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s are similarly retina (despite being 30 pin), but the iPhone 4 would fall into officially unsupported territory this cycle anyway.

So overall, there would be no more manufacturing of non-retina and non-lightning devices and other than the original iPad mini.  All available devices, even ones so old as to be worthless at this point, would be retina.  The iPhone 4s and the iPad 2 & 3 would be the last of the 30 pin stock, but other than second hand, they wouldn't have a single non-retina, non-lightning product for sale right from the moment they switched to this new strategy with the cheap phone.

iPhone Liste will most probably be today's iPhone 5 wit some features omitted and in cheaper case. It can be good for some markets, but it will not make big change in Europe. Europe aches for larger screen. Period.
