I see there are a lot of comments about "Apple would never use colors like that". I think what Apple is doing, and pretty intelligently, is to target color selections that younger generations would like. If you go to any store and take a look at girls jeans... they are available in nearly identical colors. The 80's color palettes are back with a vengeance whether you like it or not. You also see the same, over saturated tones in iOS7. This is Apple's modern look, like it or not. ...
Actually it's girls pants (not jeans), and men's pants as well.
This is what the Gap has for men's pants this season:
Looks fabulous to me, but these are actually more 1960's or 1970's colours than they are 1980's.
The 80's was all about hot pink & turquoise, or black & red.
Funnily enough, I tossed out a Bondi-Blue iMac and a Blueberry one too, just last week, and I just saw a Grape one in a sidewalk sale this morning.
I didn't ask how much they wanted for it but they aren't good for much but museums now.
I've still got a Bondi Blue model (bought in '99 I think) somewhere, and I obviously don't use it anymore, but it still works great, as good as new, should I ever feel the need to turn it on.
I wonder how many people still have working Windows PC's at home that they have kept from the previous century?
I predict (and you can quote me on this) that this new iPhone will end up proving what an excellent size the current iPhone is and that this new category of cheap phone from Apple with iPhone 5 dimensions will be a runaway hit as the iPad mini was, and defy all predictions (apart from this prediction)
[...] a device like that would literally fly off the shelves.
Oh 'Zoob, don't do that. "Literally?" As in "will grow wings and levitate?" We chastise, ridicule and berate the 20-somethings for that one. Don't let it get you, too.
I thought Ive's first work as head of industrial design was the iMac.
Heres a video of a younger Jonny Ive (with hair!) describing it with much love. Back then it looked quite posh, but I times change, even the first iMacs, once you've seen today's iMacs, those first ones looks kind of clown like, and the G3/G4 towers which looked impressive back in the day, looks absolutely outdated today, Apple have the habit of making their earlier products look dated, and they are usually ahead of the curve when it comes to computer industrial design at least in my view, PCs back then really were big clunky beige boxes, not really that long ago but feels longer.
Sure, Retina is nice to look at and is a defining premium "luxury" feature but it's hardly essential.
Yes it is. We have already established in a previous discussion that iOS7 is designed to look good on a retina display.
The thin fonts would be nigh on unreadable on a non retina screen.
Something about this seems really off. Appler's product line is very clean. Aluminum and glass. Sliver and slate. With the iPod line getting some color. But everything seems to go together. Where does glossy colored plastic fit into their product line? And then they'll have this beautiful aluminum iPod touch with the polished chamfered edges and the cheaper iPhone (which will be more expensive than an iPod touch) will be glossy colors plastic? I just don't get it. Unless these cheaper phones are only going to be sold in certain countries like China? But when has Apple ever done that before?

I agree with v5v.
The Retina display is a luxury and I don't think it's essential for iOS 7. The iPad Mini has the same PPI as a non-Retina iPhone and apparently iOS 7 still looks great on it.
Also how else would Apple be able to shave 40-60% off the price of the phone? A plastic case alone would barely shave off 10% of the cost.
A non-Retina display would mean cheaper screen, smaller battery, it would use less GPU so a cheaper processor could be used as well.
Unless Apple is using magic there is no other way I see them making a cheaper iPhone actually cheaper. Also forgoing Retina would add a value factor to the 5S preventing cannibalization and likely increasing upsale which equals PROFITS.
Since people in Asia want something different to stand out, they would like the colours. The fact that it doesn't have a bigger screen will course it a lot of problem in Asia.

Yes, it's unusual for Apple.. but boy does the icons of iOS 7 make sense now...

Always the polite charmer you are.

What?! Why?

How is trading a razors' edge of text sharpness for a lower price the mark of an idiot? Seems like a perfectly reasonable compromise to me.
Hey Woz says the 20th Anniversary Mac was a slick machine. Not everyone hated it or thought it was tacky.

Although in favor of cheaper iPhones, I am opposed to these colors. Subtle colors needed.
BTW, the colors in iOS7 are subtle, as it happens. Not like this Gap influenced malarky.
