What version of DOS was "under" Windows 95?

What version of DOS was "under" Windows 98?

How is DOS connected to Win NT, 2k and XP? Is DOS just a shell now? Or is Windows still "built on top of" DOS?

    DOS 7 was under 95/98.

DOS is not connected to Win NT/2K/XP in that the OS is not built, developed from, or running on top of DOS. It can run a DOS command prompt and apps with the virtual DOS machine (Ntvdm.exe) and Windows on Windows (Wow.exe) 16 bit Windows 3.1 emulator. The NT kernel was an entirely new clean sheet development.
