iPod-argh: Where's my music now and what is 10 G that I can't see?

Somehow the "automatic synchronization" had gone on on iTunes.



Result: I have now the same music on my iPod than I had on my iBook. That is 410 MB of music.



Before: I had 410 MB of music in iBook, and about 13,5 G of music in the 20 G iPod, free 5+ G.



Now: It shows me in iPod 10 G in use, 8 G free - and 410 MB music.



What are those 10 G that I can't see??? My lost music?? What has happened to the remaining 3,5 G lost?



How do I find and rescue my music??



I have now switched back off the automatic sync ... (and the next one switching it on will be dead).

Every of those 20 folders show that content = no files.

/Volumes/iChing/iPod_Control/Music/ folders show most music ... but itunes can't see them.

    i see most of the music in the folders.

    except the musics in the folders F00 - F02.



    I manage to copy the files from terminal, e.g.

    cp "Idiot Wind.mp3" ~/Desktop



    BUT - I can't see the files in iTunes nor in iPods display.



    I see one solution: copying EVERYTHING to a harddisk that has over 15 G of free space, remove all mp3-files from those F00 - F19 folders, and then copy them back to the ipod again in iTunes.



    - The folders F00 - F02 are practically empty, the other folders seem normal.



    Weird.

    are you using Xpod or similar Pod utilities tool?



    did the ipod think it's not at it's "home machine" anymore?



    backing the iPod to an external FW drive should be quick... be glad you're not on USB!

    It is at it's 'home mac'.

    I have used iPod viewer but AFAIK that didn't create the mess.



    Ipod itself does not me allow to see those 10 G of music. So, I see those, and the musics in them, only in terminal.



    And I don't understand what has happened to the folders F00 - F02 in it (empty).

    iPod's anti-copying technology "hides" the content from non-home macs such that the drive shows it's full of stuff, but you can't see the contents from iPod of iTunes (thinking it's not your home mac and refusing to share/copy)



    Xpod and some of the other utilities get around this by "mounting" the "hidden" partition to allow transfer back and forth irregardless of the internal copy-protection



    the interface isn't as seamless as Apple (go figure), but since Xpod will do what the iPod can't in and of itself, it may get you access to your "lost" files.



    and once you've got them into a single folder you can access again, just use iTunes | Advanced | Consolidate library to move them to a central spot and iTunes | File | Add to Library to consolidate your library again



    versiontracker might have newer tools than Xpod that offer comparable functionality... do a search for "Pod" and you should find multiple options
