Would you switch if . . .

    What bullshit.

And, so that my reply isn't a total waste, I would have to go with a "no" on this one considering that Apple demonstrated once that even if it supports a cone manufacturer, it can yank the license at any time and discontinue support via the OS or other means. If I was somebody who upgraded my computer every year then maybe I would take the chance - but for something I'm planning to keep...it would be too risky.

I know!!! I know what your getting at now..

What if Dell hired away Jonathan Ive and his whole team to redesign an incredible, iconic and user friendly line of computers. Then they worked with the leading (choose one) chipmaker to provide blazingly fast speed, (at least for the time being). And bought the license to port OSX to their new system?? Would you buy it?

    NO!

OK. OK. What if Dell started an intense software Rand D department and designed incredibly intuitive consumer level products that worked seamlessly with their new machines and made it easy for the newbie to do things they had never done before. AND while doing this they also maintained relationships with cutting edge power users and created the some of the leading pro level software packages for the media / graphics proffesional.

    probably not..

ALRIGHT! let's say that they called it the "Red Delicious" and threw a big event every few times a year called "Red DeliciousWorld"

where they unvieled new products that made the world salivate. What if they scooped up all the magazine covers and even ignited the launch of several dedicated mags just for their machines and user base. What if they seeded product on every movie and TV show. What if you could sit on a plane, whip out your machine and for some reason have this secret feeling that you were the one sheep that didn't follow the herd.... for a reason. What if they just all around made you feel cool about being a user???

    WHaaaaT??

OK. OK.!! What if they were lead by a team true visionaries. Not just business people but people who had their eyes on making life, better, easier, and facilitated the pro and novice alike to be creative and empowered. What if they developed products outside the realm of just a "well designed CPU box" What if they took that corporate vision and applyed it to.. Oh I don't know... let's say the next 10 years of product rollouts. What if they were on to bigger things than stock prices and the ever changing mhz race. What if they had the abilty to reinvent the way we do things time and time again and if they lead the industry with their vision for many years and products to come??

    SOUNDS GOOD!!!! but....?

OK. DAMMIT! they drop the stoner kid from their commercials and get Jeff Goldblum or somebody with a little class!

    SOLD!!!!

Could we just ask them to change the "Red Delicious" name to something with a few less syllables??

    Yep.

    So, what's wrong with tcsh?

Hell, even DOS has a command history...

I'd switch as long as I could run OS X.

    <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> Good one.

As for the original question: would I switch?

Hmmm.... as a rational, self-interested consumer, this is a no-brainer: Yes.

I like Apple, but I'm not about to buy their stuff just so I can have a "designer" computer. As long as they make a superior product, I'll hang around. Not a femtosecond longer.

    I'd never switch.

Bud Lite might be America's most popular beer, but I'd rather drink tap water.

By not (MS) DOS like, I mean that the command line has things like a reasonably sized history, mouse support for text selection, completion etc..

You've said that several times. And I'm telling you that it's all there already. Have you ever used OS X's command line?

tcsh has a command history that's as big as you tell it to be; you can not only invoke prior commands, you can edit them first and then invoke them. It has autocompletion (via &lt;ESC&gt;&lt;ESC&gt . It gives you the option of vi- or emacs-like text editing facilities on the command line. Mouse support is a feature of the terminal rather than the shell; I'm not 100% sure of the extent of Terminal.app's mouse support, but XTerms have had what you want for years, so I wouldn't be surprised if Terminal does as well. In my experience, the standard Apple select/cut/copy/paste functionality works as expected, and drag-and-drop works in (pleasantly) interesting ways as well. You can also run AppleScripts off the command line now.

tcsh blows MS-DOS away, utterly, and it has for years now. It's a mature and highly sophisticated environment. You should take a good long look at what it can do. Furthermore, Apple's integration of the command line into Aqua is pretty slick.

Imagine the G4 (or whatever) in front of you then imagine it in the coolest case mock up you've seen. then turn it on (complete with new sexy starup chime) and start using it like OS 9 - knowing that all your software works as before. The onlt dif would be the hardware inside it which as I've said is effectively mac (just the way macs are made - not like a PC) just not apple.

You just render faster, FCP, Photoshop effects etc are totally realtime, DVD burning at 10x, etc.

well...duh. Of course I'd switch. But if all of my mac software ran just fine, wouldn't that make it Mac OS?

Really, it sounds like what you're saying is:

Given a kick@$$ box that runs circles around everyone that can use the real OS 9/X, would you use it.

And so I give my answer again.

    well...duh.
