The mistake here is that DisplaySearch thinks the 4.7" and 5.7" are for iPhones .

Actually, they are for the new iPod Touch (IPT) sizes for better game play and second screen game controls with the ATV.

    Why not?

Calling on the IPT is usually video FT or Skype with headphones, so you don't hold it up to your head and look like an idiot.  And it is a great way to market to the youth who play more games, show off videos and pictures, more screen size tasks.  It also has the battery life to spare without the cellular chip.

It also helps reinvigorate the ipod touch line while testing build quality, demand, performance, etc without compromising the iphone success.

And if they kept the pricing structure .....

I really hope Apple makes a wider 4.5" - 5" iPhone.  I really would prefer one, but I just cant see the small text well in the 5s.  I turned the font all the way up with my wife's 5s and made it bold, but it does not change all of the text in the system.  I still cannot read the phone well with my Bifocal contacts in.

I have a Galaxy Nexus and the extra screen width does allow me to view the text with my contacts in.  It is not that I don't want a iPhone, I just cannot read the current one very well...

I am a big person and the 4.5" - 5" phones also just fit my hands better...

I understand that Apple may just say the people my size and eye site issue are just too small of a market, but I do hope that they make a phone I feel comfortable using.  I am reaching a point where I need a new phone and do not really want to buy another Android phone...

While I am vehemently against phones of either size… this is a good idea. Larger screens for the device designed to never be held to your face, putting a greater emphasis on graphics.

Well, maybe not good. I mean, they’ll still be splitting up screen sizes, you know? How many do we need? At point of completion, the lineup will have 1 (iPhone), 2 (iPod touch), 3 (iPad & mini)… Oh, wait, never mind. Three sizes is better than we have right now. They just have to stop selling the old iPod to… no, they don’t; the iPhone has the same size

I’ll do my morning handstands and get back to you. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Right, here we go. iPhone? 4”. One screen size, 1136x640. iPod touch? 4.7 or (not and) 5.7”. One screen size. iPad and iPad mini? Two screen sizes, but each 2048x1536.

So three resolutions, which is better than right now.

I don't think they'll change the amount of apps you have on your home screen but the dock will probably be able to fit 5 apps instead of the current 4.

    The prospect of a 4.7" 1280 x 720 in 2014 is quite hilarious.
I supposed by removing 48 pixels of 768, at least you can't say it is modelled on the 2012 Nexus 4.

This sounds like the same dumb schmuck who probably wrote Schmidts' "Android is more secure than iPhone" line that the whole world is laughing at right now.

I understand. I accept this reason. The others posters who frequently whine about screen size and "concern" over Apple's "competitiveness" or "lack of innovation" are just taking pot shots at Apple; they actually have no intention of ever buying an iPhone. They are just trolling. You are not.

Most of this is embarrassing garbage. I do think Apple will come out w/a bigger iPhone in the next year. I expect it to sell alongside the 4" model. Make more people happy and sell more phones. It's win win for them.

I have a lot of respect for NPD Displaysearch.  Nobody knows the display market better.  That being said, I am surprised at a number of their predictions.

For example, for Apple to produce a Phablet would be a sharp turnaround in strategy.

Having spent a significant amount of time in Asia lately, I believe this would help Apple tremendously in the Greater China market where not only are these devices common, they're typically viewed as premium versus smaller devices.   The use of a pen, while seemingly anathema to Apple is very useful in writing Chinese script, although I just can't see Apple putting a pen on a device!

As the percentage of time using a smart phone shifts from typical 'phone usage'  (talking and texting) to 'computer usage' (web browsing, gaming etc.) the trade-off will tend to shift to larger screen sizes and Apple is not immune to this.

If Apple did indeed pursue some of these products, while seeming to irritate may here :)  I believe it would be a boon for Apple and would result  in sharply higher stock prices.

This is what I was thinking. Put out enough predictions and one might stick.

And they make 6-figure salaries doing it. Yeah, real pathetic.

That's a very stupid and irrational post, for a variaty of reasons.

The fact that in 2013 you could post such BS means that you are really disconnected from the world. The iPhone isn't a f*cking phone, it's much more than that, and a bigger screen makes the "much more" part shine.

No one said that it must be a brick of some kind and even if it was, why wouldn't you buy the regular 4" line? Who the hell are you, besides someone that demonstrates such lack of culture and reality, to say that Apple "lost it" if they release a bigger iPhone?

    Wow, someone wants a Crapdroid!

See, the difference between crapdroid makers and Apple is that Apple understands what, for example, a human hand is. I get it, watching a movie or browsing internet is anyday better on a 50" screen (that's exactly why I and many others own a TV and computer for those purposes) rather than a puny 4", but you should understand that deep within, it has the DNA of a 'phone', not a netbook, or tablet, or TV or anything. And making a phone with a 5" screen is just bogus and spoils not only aesthetics, but also ergonomics. The fact that just you want a brick on an iPhone doesn't necessarily mean that Apple is going to make one for the masses who still know what the 'limit' is.

By the way, I you had read my post completely, you would have seen the last notion of me saying that this might probably never happen. Also, if it does happen, Apple will think of something so as not destroy the ergonomics. Also, I am no one (just like you) to say what is good for Apple and what not. I am just expressing my thoughts.

    Wouldn't that mean you'd be upside-down to him¿

Yes, a bigger phone next year.
They certainly gain more sales this way.

Choice will only dilute things. Doing it this way they may find they also want next years model.
And the next etc etc etc.
