Do the math on my $30/month unlimited 4G data plan with a $300 unlocked phone compared to whatever plan you're rocking, and tell me how much that iPhone costs.

Which means that people who are now getting the mid-range Android phones on a no-contract basis are saving a ton of money. They get a capable device for $150-$250 instead of $500 for, say, an iPhone 5c, and are not falling for the "free" (with 2 year contract) scam. Which means they are a lot smarter than certain people on this site give them credit for. And they are exactly the demographic that Apple is targeting with the Beats deal. If what you primarily care about is music and not using your phone as some sort of computer, instead of spending $500 on the phone, spend $250 on the phone and $250 on the headphones. Pretty savvy if you ask me.

Sample size of nearly 100,000 people, yet it suggested the iPhone 5S would outsell the 5C by over 10:1. The actual ratio was closer to 3:1.

There are a lot of assumptions made in surveys - that they are suitably random and cover wide enough age, gender and geographical demographics.

Also, when it comes to future products, people make the buying decision once they see the product and assess the price.

Asking a vague question like would you consider a phone above 4" with no insight about the design, exact size, price or features gives no meaningful information whatsoever. Did they want a 4.3" phone or a 5" phone? Did they want a $300 phone or a $600 phone?

Apple's sales share was 150m out of 1b smartphones in 2013 so it would be 35% of 850m = ~300m. In other words, Apple would triple their sales. But y'know, sample size and all that.

No, you merely jumped to conclusions.  Even with the valid comments you make about vague questions, randomness, demographics, etc., the engadget survey only sampled engadget readers, and thus can only speak to what they might do.  But you compared it to what the real world public did. Apples and oranges, friend.  If you were to do a followup survey of engadget readers ONLY, I bet you would find that the initial survey is much closer to predicting what they actually did.

Right and by the same reasoning, the survey referenced in this article lets us know that the 1427 people in the survey will consider an iPhone larger than 4". Unless we know that those 1427 people adequately represent the other 850,000,000 potential buyers in multiple countries and age groups then it doesn't tell us much. And even if it was suitably representative, the question is still too vague. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't consider an iPhone larger than 4" because that includes a 4.1" iPhone.

I would probably say the percentage of people Apple will convert to iPhone from Android with the larger device will be MUCH higher than 35%.

Most people I talk to who were foolish enough to go with a large Android phone say they did so either because of the fact it was free (or heavily discounted) on contract, or because of the screen size.

While the new iPhone's won't change the minds of the cheapo's out there, those who went for size will all come clamouring back!

How can that be possible when iPhone-class devices only account for around 33% of Android devices? Check Googles developer dashboard.

People don't by Android because they like Android, people by Android because they are addicted to choice and resent Apple for denying them their fix.

ROTFL... OK Fandroid, keep telling yourself that... The majority of consumers don't even know choice is there, and how dangerous it is. Ever ask the average owner of an Android device why they haven't replaced TouchWiz with a different launcher? Their eyes glaze over, or have a coronary because you've just spoken way too much geek speak at them.

What's wrong with someone wanting a cheap phone? Not everyone has the money or the desire to buy a £500 phone, whether it's an iPhone or not. Do you have a top-of-the range car, watch, set of golf clubs, and everything else in your life? No, because you probably don't care much about all those things. Plenty of people don't particularly care about phones.

Moan about Android users all you like, but your constant sneering at "poor people" is really not very nice. Frankly, it would have got you kicked off these forums months ago if the moderation wasn't so slanted and anaemic.

My sister-in-law picked up three Samsung Galaxy S4 phones a year and a half ago at the local Costco because they were practically giving them away. By her own admission, cost was the ONLY factor. Two of the three are presently broken and off for repairs. They will be without them for at least 4 weeks! As I told her at the time she bought them, you get what you pay for.

They can't wait for the iPhone 6 this fall and are excited to dump the Galaxy phones.

I hesitate to call them "slow learners", so let's just say that they finally "get it".

They also purchased their first Mac last summer, a 21 inch iMac and love it, so that helps.

Heh: I’ll say it for you—always pleasing when slow learners get it.

Woah, mate. You talk about being poor and ignorant, clearly you are the ignorant one. You just profiled an obese woman as being poor, ignorant, and welfare all over what type of phone she was using?

You said the women was talking loudly in her Android phone, but I've seen just as many blacks in poor neighborhoods having an inappropriate conversation on speaker on their iPhone.

Lastly, being an iPhone user that is presumably not "poor" what are you doing on the bus?

    He's travelling somewhere.

No-one has suggested there's anything wrong with someone wanting a cheap phone.

The prejudice is all yours, my euphonious friend.
