[quote]so what you are saying is that the other lines (imac, poerbook, etc) are just going to use the maxxed out g4 for the future?
give me a break and think

I think they will differentiate between the PM and iMac with things like (1)Mhz (2)Bus (3)Cache and (4)RAM.
That is:
1. You seem to be implying that the G5 will be here because the iMac is now G4. I don't think so. I think the iMac will remain as slow or slower than the PMs regardless of the quantity of available G4s. The fastest iMac is out first. This means they have plenty (or expect to have) of those chips. That also means that they have plenty of the slower chips for the iMac. If they were worried about proc yields at those speeds then they would sell the slowest first (like they always have when chip yields have been an issue). This means that they could give us better iMacs, but they won't because it would encroach even further on the PM's territory.
2. Bus. The PM has a faster bus and will continue to do so. You're telling me they couldn't have made the iMac 133?
3. Cache. 2MB L3 on the PMs, diddly on the iMac. The iMac now has a fan, they could have used the Apollos in them.
4. RAM. If it is technically possible they will upgrade the Mobo of the PMs to DDR while leaving the iMac languishing in SDRAM land.
So those a just a few of the things I *think* will distinguish the PMs from the iMac the rest of the year.
I could be wrong. I hope I am, but I think the G5 coming at MWNY is a pipedream.
Seybold? Maybe.
MWSF. Probably, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is not ready by even then.
I think you missed my point. The point I was trying to make was that just because the G4 may still have "life" left doesn't mean that there is no chance the G5 will be introduced before that "life" is up. The G3 has experienced plenty of "life" while the G4 had taken over the pro lines.
The G4 with its future abilities is needed for the consumer lines now while the pros go G5 or at least the towers for now
There is a possibility it might not be all Moto. Apple will be including lots of new technology in these new machines. Faster ram, faster bus speeds, firewire 2, etc.
A new chipset has to be developed as well.
Lots of things involved. I do not think it would do Apple any good by rushing this puppy out the door with problems.
G5 at MWSF. Yes MWSF, not MWNY. SdC will win his bet .
Why?
[the quote didn't make it, but said G4 is 'not topped out'.]
They will migrate to a smaller fab for this chip and get more speed. I put my $$$ on faster Apollos throughout this year and the G5's coming out party at MWSF.

That's all well & good, but implies nothing about G5. Room to grow in G4 means they can carry iMac & iBook (at least, and perhaps carry over a budget line of PMG4s) well into the future.
We'll need that. Assuming G5 is prototyping / testing, that means that work has already begun on G6. That design is (must be, due to lead time) already under development, and will likely take 30-36 months to bring the chips to the street. G5 will (*fingers crossed*) hold up for that length of time, but the iMac will need a processor w/ legs (ie, 'room to grow').
So, I hope G4 will stretch as far as 2gHz over the next 3 years!

Just a thought.
