Exactly, and the NSRs from I, Robot, and any of the other myriad robots we see in fiction. None, of course, with anything even remotely resembling true AI (like in fiction), but simply machines–slaves to humanity’s will–with the ability to understand us individually on a high-level basis.

So... nothing like Andrew from Bicentennial Man. But I guess any other robot from that movie would qualify.

Well, physically like him. And with the ability to tell jokes. But not feel or love or so much as think independently.

*General Purpose Humanoid Robotics: the holy grail of that field for the last 50 or so years. It will represent the convergence of high density battery tech (the earliest of which we will be seeing at the end of this decade in consumer electronics), artificial spatial awareness (they’ll probably run off of Google’s self-driving car tech at first), and intelligent assistant software (Siri’s granddaughter will be what the first GPHRs run).

Screw the "General Purpose".  I think we all know what kind of robots will be the holy grail when they can look and act humanoid. :D

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I hope Apple enters this field.  They would likely be the best at creating something attractive and stylish, not just functional!

Our brains are far more capable than people think.  Well, certainly for some people that's obviously not true, but I know you are perfectly capable of remembering a single timestamp (non-complex data) in your head for an hour or two without breaking a sweat.  But that's okay, you can keep thinking this.  Heck, if you're right, and you really are that forgetful, our conversation here is pointless, because it will be forgotten by tomorrow! ;-)

Having, in all honesty, no interest in boffing a machine, my GPHR will still be the female model. More aesthetically pleasing.

I'm not, and I highly doubt you can be given a time and know right when that time is up without ever needing to do a calibration by repeatedly looking at a clock. I set timers, calendar events, reminders, and notes for anything I don't want to miss. It takes only a moment and saves a lot of time with missed deadlines and penalties therein, all whilst letting me focus on what is really important.

One of Einstein's colleagues asked him for his telephone number one day. Einstein reached for a telephone directory and looked it up. "You don't remember your own number?" the man asked, startled.

"No," Einstein answered. "Why should I memorize something I can so easily get from a book?"

In fact, Einstein claimed never to memorize anything which could be looked up in less than two minutes.

Ah, but when they're good enough, you won't even know you're boffing a machine!  Blade Runner was just set 20 years too early.

I'm a huge Apple fan but honestly Siri is showing her age. The new Microsoft commercials made me go youtube around for some examples for Cortana's voice and it's way better then Siri. The inflections are quite nice and natural.

It'll never get me to use a Windows phone but Cortana really has very nice voice quality.

There was a very realistic Japanese robot shown in the summer, however I can't find the link. Whatever, the above should keep those of you interested busy :)

Not a prediction... but how weird would it be if Apple announced a partnership or licensing deal today with Microsoft and specifically Cortana?

Not as far "out there" as it would look on the surface (no pun)... since Microsoft is NOT going to be getting any of the mobile game any time soon, I would expect they might be up for a licensing deal. They could probably use the cash to offset all of the losses from the hardware that Cortana is on.

BTW: Bing was added as the default search for iOS... even if everyone changes it to Google.

*** the only thing wierder is if it comes during a major Microsoft event... and Tim Cook goes up live on the big screen... :smokey:

Siri will be the more important after the Apple Watch announcement. I definitely see a lot of AI overlap between understanding voice and interpreting messages
