The 4in iPhone going forward is dead, much the 3.5in before it. (insert Monty Python parrot skit here)
Just look at Xcode and how they are guiding developers to take advantage of the new bigger, higher res screens....What are they going to do, have them all downscale and optimize that again to a smaller device. Essentially no one is making any modern smartphone flagship under 4.5in. The ship has sailed. It's not an insult at those that prefer the small size, but the numbers in late 2014 are just not in your favor. To say it would have outsold the new 6 is just silly. All time records broken, 10 million in 4 days, ship dates out to November in some cases...come on.
Apple's answer to the smaller phone market is the Apple Watch in their view, which requires you to use your primary device less, and faster in those really on the go situations where a small phone seems easier. The current sizes are here to stay.
Tim Cook's primary device is his iPad, not his iPhone; he uses it 80% of the time. So it is for many, I’ll be bound.
(one thing I am waiting for is the numbers from Cannacord in December or so. Wouldn't it be a shocker if the 5S was in the #2 spot and the 6+ in the #3 spot)
That would be interesting, and frankly not completely unexpected since the phablet category of devices have not been widely popular according to Google's own Android analytics, and the 5S is still the flagship device in many countries right now.
But it would still be shocking for Apple, as the 6 Plus is the most expensive iPhone they sell, and every year until now, that has been the most popular iPhone. It would also suggest that they made a mistake in making it and should have settled for 4" and 4.7" as the premium iPhones, with perhaps the 4.7" as the flagship. In a sense, the 4.7" is the flagship even now, as most of the benchmarks favour it over the 6 Plus, contrary to what AI have stated.
In fact, they should have made one new model with a 4.5" screen.

WRONG.
The Plus has a better screen, better camera, and better battery.
CPU/GPU speed differences are immaterial. The PLUS is obviously the FLAGSHIP.
Why would entering the Phablet market be a mistake?
Its a growing market.
It commands the highest prices.
It commands the hightest margins
Many young people, professionals, and rich people want phablets.
Why on earth would Apple allow the Android makers to have free reign on the Phablet market?
On the contrary; the 6 Plus is more likely to be bought by those who can't afford an iPad, as well as those who want a bendy phone in their pocket.
On the contrary; the 6 Plus is more likely to be bought by those who can't afford an iPad, as well as those who want a bendy phone in their pocket.
nope. nice joke though. clearly shows your bias about the product.
Seriously question: have you even had a chance to hold and use the PLUS?
A phablet and full sized tablet are two distinct categories. I have an iPad Air and am waiting for my PLUS. The Air is mostly an at home device which took the place of my laptop. I can fit the PLUS in my front pocket easy. With my iPad Air I need to bring a bag. HUGE difference.
Maybe in Europe Phablets are not popular. But in the USA and Asia they are every where. 80% of the none Apple phones I see in the wild are Phablets. All the rich people I see in my city either have iPhones or Phablets.
Its amazing that you can view a person who buys the 6 PLUS that cost over $1000 (with tax, and case) as poor.
I didn't call them poor; I said that the 6 Plus would be more likely to be bought by those who couldn't afford an iPad. That doesn't mean they're poor; it just means that their budget won't stretch to the iPhone and the iPad.
I didn't call them poor; I said that the 6 Plus would be more likely to be bought by those who couldn't afford an iPad. That doesn't mean they're poor; it just means that their budget won't stretch to the iPhone and the iPad.
Maybe in China.
But not in the USA. Most of the Phablet buyers in the USA are rich and own both.
Seeing as most phablet owners in the USA are Android owners, that's highly unlikely. I should think that the rich own 80%+ iPhones.
But the main point is many of the 30 million in units would be to people who would not have chosen Apple if they did not have a phablet. If Apple did not make a phablet many of those 30 million would have chosen Samdung or HTC, ect.
Count me as one of those who would have seriously considered moving to an HTC or LG phone had Apple not released a larger phone. I went for the 6+ and absolutely love it. I would have probably been OK with a 6 if that's all they released, but I was really wanting a phone with at least a 5" screen. I'm pretty bound to the Apple ecosystem with my iPad, wife's iPhone 5, and my MB Pro Retina, but if another 4" phone was all Apple offered, it would have been difficult to stick with that.
As everyone else states, it's all a matter of preference. My wife has no desire to upgrade. She likes the form factor of her iPhone 5, and thinks the 6 is too big, never mind the 6+! Me, based on the amount of web surfing, navigation, video watching, picture taking, etc. the larger phone is exactly what I wanted. I think as the amount of things we do with our phone increases significantly even over the last 3-4 years, what used to be sufficient with a 4" screen has changed and people are ready for larger displays. That being said, I think it would be a mistake for Apple to discontinue a 4" model for a while because the demand is still out there.

I'm surprised to see how many people still prefer a more compact device than the iP6. I expected there would be some holdouts, but not as many as there seem to be.

I'm surprised to see how many people still prefer a more compact device than the iP6. I expected there would be some holdouts, but not as many as there seem to be.
Indeed.
The quiet voice of the normally silent majority should not be underestimated.
It's not at all the same as it's not hypothetical. Apple does currently sell two small phones in the 5s and 5c. If people really were turned off by the bigger sizes, would we see record sales for bigger models? Where's the spike in 5s from the "I waited and don't like the new size so I bought a 5S instead" group? Any stats I have seen show the 5 family on a slow decline as the 6 picks up share, not flat or higher, which would support your position.
Except that you're forgetting that the new iPhones aren't a bigger version of the 5/5s. There's much more to them than their size. Plus the people that want a 4" iPhone already own a 5/5s so why would they buy another one?
Personally I think the 4" form factor was a mistake and too much of a compromise. The 4.7" is the true successor to the 3.5" display. Making the display taller only, as they did with the 5 series, really was a dumb idea. It just emphazises the tinyness.
That being said, I can see a lot of people, in the future, owning three devices. Watch, the 5.5" iPhone, and at least a 9.7" iPad, but more likely the 12.9" Pro size. I could see myself going Watch/5.5/iPad Pro quite easily.
I think an iPhone Mini should bring back the 3.5" size screen.
Shouldn't it be called the iPhone Classic? "Mini" has typically been reserved for micronization advances that allow Apple to do what competitors felt they couldn't (iPod mini = smallest form factor for it's capacity at the time; Mac mini = smallest mainstream form factor x86 PC at half the price of it's competitors).
By calling the 3.5" form factor "mini" they're agreeing with the Androidistas in saying the original iPhone as "too small".
It's all a bit semantic; the truth is, Apple can define whatever they want. They can draw a new starting line in the sand and create the definitions that are relevant for the time.
The big question for me is whether or not Apple sees value in retaining three sizes of phones. They are clearly only supporting two sizes in terms of the iPhone 6, which implies that they are unlikely to add a third other than providing legacy support for the iPhone 5 and 5s.
Given the experience with iPhone 5s and 5c, I am very interested to get a sense of how the sales stack up for the 6 and 6 Plus, especially in terms of which size comes out as the clear front runner (if at all).

It will be really interesting to see what is done next year.
I have a strong suspicion that next year there will be a 4" model....probably in the body of the 5s, that is updated with A8 processor and few other spec bumps from the iPhone 6. Still making it sort of "last year's phone" but not the leaving the 4" size completely in the dust. There are simply too many people that want to keep to the 4" size for them to simply keep the 5c and 5s unchanged next year.
And I think it would be ridiculous if next year a 6s and 6s+ were introduced, and this years' 6 and 6+ kept around at lower price points. It would muddy the waters of the product line something fierce.
Today I've had a chance to play around with the iPhone 6 and 6+ in the Apple store.
Final verdict: even the iPhone 6 is too big.
Apple should do something in between 3.5 inch and 4 inch without compromising the screen ratio.
I was pretty happy with the iPhone 6 screen size, honestly. It feels like a nice bump up from the iPhone 5. My biggest issues were fairly cosmetic (as stated earlier), although I've since discovered that because my employer is a subsidiary of the biggest carrier here...I am eligible for a huge discount on a plan for a new phone.
So, with that said, it looks like I will be going for an iPhone 6 after all. I think I'm going to immediately purchase one of the leather covers though, as it should help to address some of my earlier aesthetic sensitivities. ;-)
The big phone thing is really something you have to get used to. I'm coming from the 4s and going to the 6 and thought the first couple of days that I had made a mistake. I got a great case with the hip holster and I'm loving the 6! As others have mentioned there may be a market for the 4" iPhone with the newer internals. It will be interesting to see if Apple will go back to a smaller phone as well as the large phones.
