iPod engraving
Does anyone else think it would make more sense to charge by the letter, and the more letters you get, the cheaper they become? I mean, I would love to have my name engraved on it, but not for $49. If they charged a dollar per letter, I could have it done for $12, which I would be more than happy to do.

Guess I'm not going to be engraving mine.

The engraving is perfect for contact info in case you lose the thing. It also serves to make a theif feel guilty since they'll know whose it really is and how to get it back to them.
Engraving anything like, "Happy Birthday!" is stupid, in my opinion. That's what cards or sticky notes attached to the freakin' thing are for.

But this also makes it harder to resell...--UNLESS--you could buy "blank" backs straight from apple! (or newly engraved ones, if you wanted) so you could "mix and match" your backs! i think this could actually work!--only problem would be removing the back, but aparantly its possible....

Not any harder than
"Happy Channukah Fivel!
Mazeltov and such!"
Say you drop your iPod somewhere and someone else picks it up, what's more useful:
"Happy birthday Joey! Hope you had a great 13th!"
or
"Willie Loman's iPod. If lost: [email protected]"
?
Neither one is good for resell, but one actually serves a purpose a sticky note couldn't.
"papa was a rolling stone."
Someone earlier mentioned wanting Apple to allow purchasers to send it in for engraving. If you look around in your area, you can probably find a place that can do it for you, and I doubt they would charge you $50, probably a little less. The metal back comes off pretty easy.
I wish they had a trade-up program to go from 5GB to 10GB... I've already filled up my 5GB, but my gf will kill me if I bought another one of these things...

Not everyone who finds it will just steal it. I've found all kinds of valuable stuff at the lab I proctor, I usually keep them out on the desk when I'm there and have the co-procs do the same.
If I found a friggin' iPod I wouldn't just say "whoopee!" and saunter home, especially if it had contact info.

Having a card permanently laser engraved onto your iPod seems a little silly. But if you live in a dorm room, or some other situation, where multiple people have iPods it wouldn't hurt to be able to flip the little bugger over and see who's it is.
I think you'll be able to get this done in the Apple Stores. Could be wrong though.

I have SCRATCHES, and I DON'T LIKE THE SCRATCHES!!!! There should be some solvent to rub on it, because, lemme tell you, I am a sad little boy with an iPod that, in the reflection, shows a scratched up, sad boy, face
