Admittedly HTML5 seems like a worse replacement - but surely a solution for the "playing video on the web" problem could be found that's better than Flash...

It seems like a great replacement to me. There are still some issues with supplying ads via HTML5. So far you can scroll through them quickly or just refresh the page to get to the video is YouTube pops one up. Until Google (and others) can find a better solution — especially for their paid content — I don't see Flash will not go away.

I went to the link recommended in this article which gives instructions on how to get automatic updates of flash. That adobe forum page tells me I'm running Flash 16.0.0.235, and I'm running Firefox on a Window 8 machine. Say what?

My version is actually 16.0.0.287, running Safari on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1

So much for Adobe program quality.

Mine says: NPAPI Plug-in version 16.0.0.296 is installed.

No idea who this is, but it's one of those typical comments that I thought were stupid, but had to sit back and wait for reality to unfold to the point that it's doubtful that guy is pro-Flash on a smartphone today.

I run Safari on a Mac and never installed Flash. Life is good. But why sites like Facebook and Google insist on using Flash and not allowing me to view videos is beyond me. Forget it. I don't need to watch video on their websites if it's in Flash.

Flash needs to die and the only way it will is if we stop installing/using it.

I have the bad .287 version running in Win 8.1 VM on Parallels, when I go to update, MS says I have the most recent version, and so does Adobe's web page. I have disabled it for now. MS just installed some automatic updates as well, still no sign of the newer version.

It is six years old, but everything that guy wanted is just so wrong.

Fred Wilson is one of those PC/MicroSoftened types who does not get Apple's design sense, neither hardware nor software. Gruber sums him up here:

That guy! Yeah, he definitely doesn't understand anything Apple does. Those types of people are just annoying because they aren't stupid in the general sense, yet lack some basic ability to see what I consider to be obvious patterns. I'm not sure if it's a self-imposed delusion or simply not wired properly to understand some basic principles that have made Apple success they are.

I wonder if you meant the opposite of that.

I wouldn't dream of suggesting that it was a typo. ????

You may install it, but Microsoft also install their version via Windows Update

Meh. (is that the right word? Yes, I think that's it) I just block Flash on websites that use it. (uh… like this one I'm on now)

Flash games now use the Unity web plugin. Flash movies now use H.264. Time to get rid of flash completely.

Even I am getting fed up with Flash. I used it for years because it is such a powerful tool. And that is the main problem with Flash, it is too powerful. It can access the file system and the OS and memory space. None of that is very necessary these days. They should make a Flash Lite which just displays content to the screen. I have pretty much stopped using it except for one case. I have these vertically mounted monitors at the trade show booth and I use Flash because I can easily rotate the content 90° plus the text is really sharp being vector and it is easy to loop, edit and runs full screen with no window frame. Using Flash on the web is stupid, primarily because it does not run on iOS. That alone should be enough reason for developers to stop using it besides the security issues.

the Adobe security notice lists IE and Firefox specifically as vulnerable. but does not list Safari. so is Safari vulnerable too or not?

The best line is towards the end: "I'm rooting for Adobe and its allies like Nokia and Palm (and hopefully Blackberry) to win this game."

I get the same thing. But I don’t think I have Firefox on my Mac mini. I dumped it long ago because of Flash.

This is all I seem to find when I search for Firefox or anything Adobe or Flash:

    • Adobe Flash Player Install Manager

    • Adobe Flash Player Install Manager.app

    •Adobe Reader

and then a bunch of AdobePDFPDE800.plugin(s)

Then I get the same as waldobushman:

"That adobe forum page tells me I'm running Flash 16.0.0.235, and I'm running Firefox on a Window 8 machine. Say what?"

Yet I dumped Firefox a long while back yet still get this message.

    ----

So does this mean I have AdobeFlash running in the background?

?And I did get that update notice and followed through. . .

?I do know that occasionally I get the Flash icon on a site and have to click it to work—then is this true flash or HTML?

    Very confusing.

Would appreciate suggestions. I do use YouTube a lot and haven’t had any probs downloading vid-files or seeing them.

I have extensions: ClickToFlash, ClickToPlugin and others AllMyTube, for example that I thought saved me from having to use Flash etc.

Is this a case where once one’s virginity has been compromised, no amount of surgery is gonna get it back? ????

    Namaste and care,

    mhikl

Safari blocks the use of Flash when it’s out of date, so perhaps it’s not vulnerable simply because you can’t use it anymore…
