This had me completely fooled. I could have sworn it was a photo, but the guy who did it says it's all illustrator. I'm impressed at least.

Wow. What an amazing work

I wonder how slow the screen redraw will be

    That's... damn good. Wow.

But why such sharp aliasing on the edges? Yuck!

    So sad that he uses Windows 98... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Ahh yes, the gradient mesh tool. Actually, once you know what you're doing, it's really not difficult at all. It is, however, incredibly time consuming. In my vector graphics class we had to do a photorealism assignment, and I did the iSub. It turned out pretty sweet...not as good as that guy's G4, but I only had a week. When I get my portfolio back I'll try to remember to throw it on my web site.

Eh, crank it out in a short day with FormZ. I put together a pseudo iMac in 3 hours, keyboard and all. It's not exactly accurrate, but it didn't need to be, granted the circumstances.

I saw that and I thought, "Gee, there's no way I would have done that in 2D." Impressive nonetheless, since the heavily-artificial, apple-trademarked reflections don't come off too well from renderer algorithms.

It's funny how commonly apple's products are used for that project. and honestly, in that g4 picture, that's about the easiest thing to do, a regular plastic surface. you can tell in the image that it gets dicey in the clear handles, whenever you try anything translucent, transparent, or with a natural texture, it gets increasingly difficult to portray as real.

    <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/scadboy/sell/ibook.jpg"; target="_blank">my ibook rendering</a>

I chose an iBook when I did this a little over a year ago. funny enough that the new style iBooks came out exactly two days after I started the project.

everyone who's taken vector graphic at scad, especially with scott boylston is going to hate me and think I'm just a boastful prick when I say this, but I had that project done in six days of moderate effort. We were given two weeks, and several kids in my class didn't finish in time. It's really super-easy, just polygon, mesh, eye dropper, repeat until done.

Personally, I feel that if you're going to for photo-realism, then for pete's sake, just take a f'ing picture. Illustration is for stylization. Yes, you can create a very compelling photographic image in illustrator, if you labor for hours on end, but you can also create one in a split second with a camera.

LOL, you're right. The best part though is that it looks hard to people who haven't done it. The people who run into problems with that project are the ones who pick things that have a lot of intricate detail. I had 90% of the iSub done in three days, and it took the rest of the time we had to draw in all the electrical-looking bits at the bottom.

    btw...been to <a href="http://www.scad.info"; target="_blank">scad.info</a> yet, michael?

scadboy, that's pretty good, it only kinda falls apart in the upper corner where the lower case approaches the handle. The keys look great. What do you think would be harder to draw, the PM or the iBook?

The powermac's clear handles are the most difficult part of the entire illustration, the rest of it would be super easy, it's all flat matte or glossy plastic. The ibook has the keyboard, which required the most effort, each key is made of five objects, the mesh, with the color, a mesh with shadow, a clipping mask, and then then two text objects. multiply that by the 80-100 keys visible in from that angle, and it gets a little repetitive. They're pretty much on an even plane, until you factor int he keyboard.

poor taylor, I've been tracking <a href="http://www.scad.info"; target="_blank">www.scad.info</a> for the past few months. I'm friends with some professors and other SCAD staff that pretty much confirm everything the site says. I always had a weird vibe about SCAD, always thought something was up with the way the school was run, etc, but I never knew it was so... scary.

anyone considering scad? read <a href="http://www.scad.info"; target="_blank">www.scad.info</a> first.

    ciao,
