Well, not if it takes touch differentiation (a finger touch doesn't look like a butt pressure ;-) and a fingerprint (you know touch ID is in there too :-) to wake up and unlock the phone. Then, the screen could in fact be the home button. That would be one hell of a tech (getting the touch, and the fingerprint from anywhere on the screen, processing it, unlocking). That would be a worthwhile "gimmick" and I don't see any competition on that from anyone for many years (hell, they're not even doing touch ID yet).
I don't think numerical consistency means all that much to Apple or Microsoft. It's just marketing.

If the iPhone 3G and 3GS are of the same versioning, as with the 4 and 4S, or 5 and 5S, then there was only one version between the original iPhone (surely the 1?) and 4. The fact that it was called the 3G instead of a regular number obfuscates things, but it was either the 2 or the 3. I say 2, you say 3, let's call the whole thing off

Definitely. He has probably paid someone in the supply chain somewhere. But as a reporter I guess his sources are protected. Apple should still try to find out how he's doing it.

Recall the holier-than-thou 'OMG, how could they' faux rage directed at Gizmodo, the finger-pointing, the media and blog cicus, the court case surrounding it, etc. Some of us predicted then that, given the demand for this kind of info won't go away, the supply will merely shift to less scrupulous and less reliable sources of leaks in the Far East (where the supply chain is).
I'm still waiting on the inclusion of PrimeSense sensors in an Apple product. Such a 3D proximity sensor in an iPhone could bring all sorts of very creative and imaginative apps! I was expecting this to be the new sensor technology in the iPhone 6S. Apple traditionally has just introduced one new sensor technology at a time per generation of iPhone products. Adding Force Touch and the PrimeSense sensor in a single product would be a welcome break from that tradition. That said, it may just be that the PrimeSense sensor will be introduced this year in the 6S and the Force Touch sensor next year in the iPhone 7 - or both this year and hence we will get an iPhone 7.

That's not a bad idea for a future iPhone concept... Screens on both sides and mica and earpieces on top and bottom and both sides so that it could be used no matter how it's held. The home button would have to go and the sides would have to be entirely touch sensitive so that functions could be applied according to orientation... Hmmm
This feature sounds really cool after reading more about it. I'm anxious to give it a try on the new MacBooks sometime. Apple keeps adding these unique features into their products, which will cause competitors' margins to shrink even more if they decide to mimic them.
He's usually right about hardware features. This could indeed be revolutionary depending on the level of imagination applied. And it seems likely to catch the competition off guard in the same way 64-bit did.
Android has a similar but less technical version of this called long touch/tap. Though I am sure Force Touch will offer more possibilities.
This technology is going to allow iOS to be used with future Apple trackpads and mice. For example, a mouse pointer will be able to be moved around on a docked iPad screen and icons and hotspots will be able to be clicked by Force Touch presses. Brilliant!
This is going to allow people to use their iPads as their main computers, all they'll need is a standing ipad, bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth magic trackpad or mouse.
I hope they ditch the numbers. The larger the numbers get the more unwieldy (iPhone 10, iPhone el-e-ven ... gross)
