I'm going to presume the crops needs some protection from the crows with that strawman because I didn't mention any of those items except for channel store which you might construe as an app store.

No kidding. The gen3 came out over 3 years ago, and this 2014 survey was thus with a 2 year old device. But really outside of adding 1080p support and a new cpu, the gen3 was really not much different from gen2. So in many ways Apple was competing with a 4 year old device and still doing ok.

Maybe. We will see when they actually announce. A cost reduced version of the current product with a couple of software updates isn't a big jump. Certainly not a multi year jump. I would like to see a real leap too, but we might get the same timid, underwhelming bump as the iPod touch did.

Yeah, just cut together his dialogue from previous presentations (use recordings of practice sessions to avoid clapping overlap) and boom, a new Steve Jobs presentation.

...And I just gave myself an idea.

Less than a month before the new TV will be announced I guess, or two if they announce it in october.

Why do people take these research reports as undeniable fact when they are just guesses or estimates? I guess somebody just has to have a piece of paper in hand to reinforce their opinions.

You can tell by the mobile OS they choose. These are the same people who think a quad-core device with GPU decode will play a 1080p stream better than a single-core device with GPU decode. Or that App-centric content is better than a content-centric App.

It might behoove them to tack it on to the end of the iPhone presentation.

The Apple TV is just a “hobby” now. If they don’t make the new one a headliner, they can keep up this pretense if it doesn’t do as well (or as much) as people expect.

How many people are buying Apple TVs just for AirPlay? I know that's about the only thing I use my 2nd gen for.

First-gen Core 2 iMac in the basement, bigger hard drive hooked to it, iTunes library on that, stream to my Apple TVs.

Wish I could just plug the hard drive into our AirPort, but NO, you have to have a COMPUTER ON and iTUNES OPEN to use a device from a company that doesn’t want you to need to have a computer to use its portable devices, but...

Also wish I could assign an Apple TV access to multiple iTunes libraries simultaneously so that I could just hop back and forth between them, but...

If that’s what you mean by AirPlay, then yes. :p

The more I think about this space, the more I wonder if Apple does have to sell the glass as well - a true Apple Streaming flat panel TV

Now I know all the issues - little margin in selling the glass, Apple can add no real value, different sales channels...etc etc...

But if they don't, the challenge long term will be every set they want to connect a new Apple TV to will itself be a smart tv, likely a Samsung. The Apple TV will always be an add on purchase for something that already exists in the set - a package of streaming services. Apple may do it better, but if others do it well enough to AND it's already in the set customers paid for, it's a tougher sell. Owning the panel cuts competitive services out, or at least some makes them an add on service.

And somehow, Apple does provide enough engineering to its glass making partners to consistently make some of the finest computer displays available. Why not apply that to an industry that's filled with many sets that have color, greyscale, processing, uniformity, and other issues?

Finally, between the Apple Stores, Best Buy, Microcenters, Frys etc, Apple could easily have more than enough outlets (being US centric for now).

Still would need to make a stand-alone streaming box for those that don't want to change sets, but a full fledged display makes more and more sense when you think of some of these issues. And an integrated set can afford some other unique benefits and better home/hub integration as well...

Or, conversely, they license tvOS to set manufacturers (competitors would have none of that though)...

Rarely use Airplay. Use it for Netflix and iTunes movie rental and TV shows. We use it A LOT.

I really hope Apple supports a hard drive directly connected to AirPort/ Time Capsule. I have a Mac Mini sitting below the ?TV right now, from which all my content is streamed to the ?TV.

Put iTunes into AirPort directly and modify the AirPort app to enable configuring a hard drive easily.

Still, I wonder how it would identify file types. If I wanted to play some movies from a Memory Stick on the PS3/ PSP. it had to be in some specific folder structure order, which was not very intuitive. I hope Apple can come up with a better way, if they even bother to look into it!

Not bad for a hobby that hasn't been updated for 3 years. Still kicking with the companies that do this for a living.
