Poll: WORST Mac of all time!

As long as we're going on about all those Macs we wish Apple were cranking out today, we may as well mention those Macs we think Apple should have never made.



So chip in your two cents, and tell us what you think the worst Mac ever made was (for its time). My vote goes to the PowerMac 5200. Worst mobo design ever, ran slower than some Quadras, and had a low-quality built in monitor. At least if you had the modular equivalent (the 6200) you could put a nice monitor on it.

    Probably the worst mac for its time has to be the current 800mhz PowerMac G4.



    Oh ya, the Apple III sucked too

    The 550c was actually the best 68k PowerBook ever made. It was the only one to have a full 68040 (the 520 and 540 had 68LC040s), and it was only sold in Japan. It was also black, not gray.



    The PowerBook 5300, first PPC PowerBook, was the one that burst into flames occasionally. That one was pretty bad. Apple had to give a seven or ten year extended service warranty on it. Not only did the power supply burn, but the plastics frayed, it cracked, and melted, and just about anything else that could happen to a laptop, did.

    RUBBISH!!! Forgive me for calling your post rubbish but how is the 800MHZ the worst??? My Powerbook rocks!

    No, he said the PowerMac (you know, the desktop, not the laptop, which is a PowerBook). I understand the sentiment... but even though it's overpriced, it's way better than years ago. The LC, for example, was on the low end, and it sold for somewhere around $2300.

    I certainly agree with the 5200 being the worst. But the 630 and 4400 both come very close as well..!



    Edit: Arggh, just remembered this awful tower...the Performa 6400. Ugly MF...The worst design in Apple's history perhaps <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    The PowerBook 5300 must take the prize for exploding in people's laps. However, I would have to say the runner up is the so-called QuickSilver line. Never has Apple produced pro machines so woefully underpowered in comparison to the competiton. Let us hope IBM delivers us from the performance anemia we've been suffering from for such a long period of time.

    I have a 6400. I don't mind its looks, except it's really hard to disassemble.



    I'd agree that the 5200 was bad. The 5300/6300 weren't so bad (603e @ 100MHz rather than 603 @ 75MHz, l2 cache). The LC II also gets a low score, for its bizarre treatment of memory.

    Do you all believe everything you hear on the 'Net? The 5300 NEVER EXPLODED. There was one that did burn during QA testing IN A LAB ENVIRONMENT and that was attributed to faulty design of the Sony battery. To this day, no 5300 in the field has burst into flames. Now stop feeding the fire for those PC Weenies.



    Dell and Compaq, on the other hand, did have problems with laptops and/or power bricks catching fire in the field.

    4400 They were crap I had to use one at university and it was so rubbish I nearly turned to the dark side..... (but not quite )

    Has to be the "MacTV".







    Based on the LC 520 in a black case (one of a very few "Black Macs").

    Had a TV card and very little else.

    10,000 were made from late '93 - early '94.

    The IIVX/Performa 600 gets my vote too. They duped unknowing consumers big time (I was one of them ). Oh well, I learned alot from that buying mistake!

    I got duped by a 6330 and an LC II ( performa 410 actually, but a performa came with a monitor ). Both sucked really bad and very slow compared to other computers of there respective generations. I could have gotten a powermac 7200 instead of the 6330 but I thought the MPEG card in the 6330 was too cool. When I actually owned it, I never used the MPEG card once! It just died this past weekend. I gave it to my mom and it wouldn't start no matter what we did. No video, sound or any kind of signal anything was happening. Oh well. The LCII is still alive and kicking but there is nothing we can use it for and it is slow as hell.
