Preach on, brother! You're totally right. When I bought my iMac in March, I brought it home and purposely took my time and savored the whole experience (opening the box, going through all the accessories/disks, lifting the styrofoam out, putting the iMac on the desk and looking at it from every conceivable angle (with this goofy, permanently platered-on grin), etc.

    It's the BEST! It's gold, Jerry...gold!</strong><hr></blockquote>

It's funny but that post is so SAD to read but then I realised I was EXACTLY THE SAME!!! It truely is the coolest thing to do!

Keeps your new baby safe while not looking like a laptop bag at all. Screw the keyboard thing. Get a mouse if you're doing graphics work. (I'm just repeating Jon, but he's right.) BTW, I've had mine for 6 months now and I haven't noticed any excessive noise from the HD. My fan comes on quite a bit, but that's supposed to be fixed in the new models. Get an Airport basestation if you can afford it and will have broadband. And a good set of headphones. Forget the floppy drive (so 1990's ) or external FW drive.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Heh, they don't look like laptop bags because they aren't! There's barely any difference between the Commuter bag and the Computer Commuter bag... They also look much better in photos than in real life, IMO. Seriously, I spent some time with the Timbuk2 Mogwai in consideration for my sister's TiBook and when I finally was able to find one in a store it was humongous! She could fit 4 hardback textbooks into the thing and still have plenty of room for a PowerBook G4 (inside included sleeve) and accessories.

I bought the Brenthaven Titanium-1 instead since it's barely any bigger than a typical laptop bag. It's designed specifically for the TiBook so the sleeve's internal dimensions are exact. The bag is also more squat than others. It's a little bit deeper than my sister needs for her TiBook but definitely not the size of a Timbuk2 bag. An entire Brenthaven Ti-1 can fit inside a Timbuk2 Mogwai.

Actually, I think a laptop case is important. Not much of the other stuff is, but when you spend $3000+ on a new computer, it needs to be taken care of.

Granted the case I got with my Pismo was free and Apple just sent me a new free computer case but I couldn't imagine tossing my PowerBook into my backpack.

It's much too easily broken even when you have a good case and don't expect Apple to fix it even when you have an Apple Care extended warranty plan.

I can't imagine throwing a Ti into a backpack witout protection, but I have no problems putting a Pismo or clamshell iBook in one. Other than the screen hinge being a bit loose (been like that since day one,) there's no durability problem that I can think of with my other sister's Pismo. The old iBooks are built like tanks as well.

For photoshop work, you can't beat a wacom tablet!

I used to use a mouse...then i started using the tablet because it let you do more things, more precise, and with pressure sensativity...wow. I'm not sure what your doing in photoshop, but if its anything that will require u to use any tool other then the rectangular marque tool get a tablet, for $350, assuming u have the money and RAM, u will have a full photoshop beast.

I'm jk you can use PS without a tablet but for anything professional you need it. You can get cheaper tablets, but the $350 is the size we use and its lovely, runs with os x and everything, think WACOM!

Ah yes, I remember when I first got my new TiPB 550 6 months ago...

    1. Pro Mouse - a must

    2. Brenthaven Ti-1 - It's taylormade for the Ti and when you spend that much $ on a laptop, you NEED to protect it!

    3. There is no step 3! There's no step 3!

PS. And um, earphones for watching movies on the airplane! Oh, yeah! BTW, everybody seems to dread taking their laptop out of their bag at the airport security lines... I freakin' love it! I proudly take mine out and display for all the PC saps that openly drool at it!

I bought my TiBook the day it came out. Since then I have treated it like a slave.

It goes over my back to my place of work by bicycle every day and it's learned to love intercontinental flights.

    To summarise:

-Opening the box made me leak from my face. This was mostly saliva. Ah, the smell! The transparent sheet stuck to the screen! Ai, me.

-I've heard no developing noise and my machine's a proper oldie.

-I use my machine every day, for hours, with no extra keyboard or mouse, and my wrists and metatarsals are jim dandy. Carpal tunnel syndrome I spit in your face.

-Buy an iPod. Do it do it do it. FireWire hard drives r us.

-My TiBook's scratched, dented and peeling. Fortunately it's a design classic so this is OK. No-one gets upset when their zippo gets scuffed, now, do they?

And speaking of tobacco, I must to the shop.

No external hard drive? What is MacGirl storing her thousand+ MP3 collection on? A girl's gotta have her music... 'Course I'm a guy. So what would I know?

thanks for the help everyone. I ended up getting an extern Firewire HD from a friend, bought a pro keyboard and mouse, and a sleeve for when i need to throw it in my bag. The only bad thing is that i don't have it yet . How the *&#$ is Apple going to increase their marketshare if they can't delieve a computer in less than a week. Now i have to go back to school without it and have it sent up to the barren wasteland known as Ithaca

I can't believe that so many people are recommending an Apple pro mouse -- a multi-button scroll mouse is the only way to go!

I got a usb zip drive, case, pro keyboard and a cheap CompUSA optical scroll mouse for my Ti powerbook. The mouse didn't have Mac software, but osX recognized it and works great.

MacGirl, you really should get a lock.

Order a <a href="http://www.kensington.com/products/pro_sec_d1349.html"; target="_blank">Kensington ComboSaver</a>. Forty dollars, a combination instead of a key, and a cinch to lock and unlock. Trust me, you'll be very sad if your $3000 laptop walks away from the library one day.

I also just ordered an 800MHz TiBook (it hasn't arrived yet though.) I got a heavy-duty aluminum tool case from a Lowe's home improvement store. It's by a brand called Taskforce (Guardforce on the Lowe's website). It's 18" long and is filled with foam which is perforated so it's easily modified to fit a PowerBook. It was a steal at 18 bucks. I'm going to buy a Kensington ComboSaver lock since I'll be using it in a dorm in Chicago. I'll also buy a 2-button optical mouse with a scroll wheel.

Maybe it's only me that needs one for my collection... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
