Is there a way in Finder to have File name length stay put and not have to reset it every time you r

Pretty straightforward question. I have some long (not overly long) named folders, so I drag or double click the finder indentation in name, then then I go one back and one forward to be in the same folder again Finder returns to the same preset length for name ignoring what I set the last time. I 've been a mac user since way back when but I 've only noticed that, perhaps it's one of these things that goes under the radar for who knows why, or is it some El Capitan preset that I need or can change via secrets or some other such app or via the terminal, to have the finder remember the folder length name setting?
