Just imagine if a senior Apple exec were to be spotted with a competitor's phone.  Or even if Tim Cook were to be spotted wearing a traditional watch.  The press would go bat-sh!t crazy with the story.  And everyone would jump aboard the Apple bashing train.

He may be a jerk, but he's not stupid.

that's probably 1 of 3 phones he uses...and what better way to understand the competition than to use their product the way in which a consumer would? Elon Musk also owns and drives a Jaguar - does that mean Tesla sucks?
No, it's probably for when he wants to drive more than 250 miles round trip.

Probably when he wants to drive a real luxury car that is actually equipped like a luxury car should be, unlike the bare-bones Model S.

Or he wants to have performance that doesn't degrade after a few minutes of spirited driving due to overheating the electrics.

It's only fascinating as a contrast with Apple culture, where if an employee -- much less an executive there -- were to use a competitor's product, they'd be in big, big trouble. The real world, though, is nuanced. Apple makes great products. Google makes great products. Personally, I use a combination of 'em. It's just the fanboys (on both sides) that perpetuate the annoying "ZOMG, loyalty!!!!1" crap. So, yeah, maybe Eric wanted to check out the competition. Or maybe -- like many geeks -- he has two phones, one for work, one for fun, to better keep things separate. Who knows? But why judge? I mean, seriously, this is news?!?

    Possible reasons:
    1. He is taking deliberately bad shots and posting them as Tim Cook.
    2. He does not want to be tracked while having 'fun'.
    3. He really can't tell the difference between phones and just grabbed it from one of Google staff.
    4. He is just plain stupid.

    5. He values his privacy, despite telling the rest of us it's obsolete.

Probably due to its uncrackable smartphone, even FBI.

He left his own Android phone at home as he bricked it the night before when trying to install the latest beta of TWRP on it. So he 'borrowed' his wife's phone before rushing to the airport.

The reality: the hatred for other platforms and insistence on only using a single one is absolutely, definitely an Apple thing only.
When you use the very best how can you not hate all the ripoffs, also-rans, and just plain junk that other platforms push? I've used most of that other stuff, and refuse to be a masochist any longer.
"The very best", it's all subjective..

I knew a Schmidthead or fandroid would regurgitate the cliche "but but but he understanding the competition!! durr hurr"

Or maybe he's made enough money selling user data from his moronic fanbase to afford BRAND NAME legit products? When do you see Apple execs use cheap knockoffs to "understand the competition". There is no competition.

Then again android is just a cheap iOS ripoff so you may be right. Understand how to copy Apple even more than they've blatantly have.

Why in the FU** would an Apple exec use a cheap knockoff??? You make no sense like expecting Micheal Jordan to use knockoff shoes of his own brand to "understand the competition" or else he's a loyal "fanboy".

"Google makes great products"??? The last product Goog made was Google Glass, everything else is a cheap knockoff they didn't create. No one likes their products except for the few dedicated iHaters who look like geeks with cardboard attached to their Glasses.

    "Understand the competition"???
You are aware that Schmidt was a board member when Apple developed the iPhone, and that he came out on stage during the iPhone's launch keynote in 2007 to praise what a magnificent job Apple had done? Are you aware Apple worked with Google prior to launch to get Maps and YouTube data, ad free? Did you know Schmidt and Jobs worked out a deal to make Google the default search engine in Safari? Back then they weren't the competition, they were partners. Schmidt understood the iPhone from the beginning.
The iPhone has changed a bit since 2007.
