I use GMail for one of my accounts yet never have seen even one ad based on anything that might have been in a message, but I've read that they do register keywords for ad targeting. I've just not seen it for myself. Within GMail itself I don't see ANY ads, targeted or otherwise.
Google is very smart compared to other Spying Apps. You seldom see obvious evidence of Google's spying, but believe me Google grabs all the info they can about you and keep it forever unless you ask them to delete what they have. Then later they direct you to their advertisers.
So advertising scares you or do you imagine they're doing "something else" with your data and if so what is it?? They don't even allow collection of a whole plethora of sensitive personal information (ie, health, religion, sexual persuasion and a dozen other categories) so it's not like they're going to market condoms, or vibrators or adult diapers or Bible's to you. Seems relatively benign advertising.
it's their way of ensuring no lost of "search profits".... google search is used....
.... and as it gains popularity, it will surely tie in more of it's services to the "portal" to using their services (thus ensuring and helping them make money.... without the needs for contracts/royalties/etc.... brilliant)
Installing 3rd party keyboards on iOS is a very niche activity- almost everyone I know is not even aware that option exists. So, I very much doubt it will gain any kind of critical mass.

Yeah Goog totally doesn't care about your personal health and medical data. /s

Did you read anything about it, detail wise? This isn't Google, nor does it have even the teeniest connection to advertising. I'm sure you were well aware of that if you read about it only a tiny bit.
EDIT: I missed your sarcasm tag initially. Gotcha, my bad.
Good tool for data mining. I'm sure somewhere in the terms and conditions people are accepting is a clause that allows the company to capture, store and analyze the data.
As more evidence that Google likes iOS users too they've added an app just for Apple users going to their Google I/O 2016 conference. Curious to see how many downloads it gets.
Yeah, a lot of apps ask if they can use the stuff I'm typing for 'usage data' and the like. I say yes to some, no to others. This usually depends on their past record.
Google has been fined for pulling usage data from Safari, even though the user opted out. (They took advantage of a bug in Safari to do it). So, judging by Google's past record of taking stuff without permission, I'd like to opt out of anonymous statistics because I can't be sure they're anonymous.
Mmmm. Thinking about it, even if I opted out of anonymous statistics, with Google's track record, they'd probably take them anyway.
It does not mean Google will not use the data about your activities in text to market to you. They may anonymize the data, but they still have ways to tying the information back you. You send a text about going out for Chinese and use this feature and the next things you know your seeing ads for Chinese restaurants on web pages all provided thanks to google
If using GMail. . .

Your experience differs from mine.
A friend emailed me about literature courses, and the gmail turned up with a load of ads for literature courses.
I thought it was quite useful actually… or I would have done if I was the person asking.
Perhaps predicting the backlash that would come with the release of a system keyboard from the world's largest collector of personal information, Gooogle is quick to point out that it will collect only "anonymous statistics" in order to "diagnose problems when the app crashes and...know which features are used most often."

EDIT: Only for the article bot, it seems.
Also upgrade Siri. Please.

Yup, better to just steer clear of it, I think.

Well that's not at all sinister
